I work with clients in the LGBTQIA+ community, children ages 5 and up, and people with histories of trauma.
Life moves swiftly, and it can be especially tough when we find ourselves trapped in outdated patterns that no longer benefit us. This often leads to feelings of disconnection, being unheard, and feeling unseen, causing us to question our identity and values. We may struggle with what it means to be our authentic selves, especially when we lack a space where we can truly express who we are. In the whirlwind of our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to feel lost. Therapy is the place to understand yourself. A good therapist can help give you alternative perspectives, support your goals, and help you see yourself in a new light.

I believe that feeling heard is a crucial step toward mental wellbeing. I prioritize meeting clients where they are and understanding how the world around each person impacts them. This inspires me to create an affirming and encouraging therapeutic environment for clients of any age or background, particularly LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent clients.

As a trans, queer, and neurodivergent individual, I understand how difficult it is to navigate challenges related to gender, sexuality, and identity in general. I am passionate about serving anyone who may have been marginalized for who they are and how they exist in the world. I am skilled in issues related to LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly those with a background of spiritual or religious trauma. I also have experience in supporting the development of gender diversity, neurodiversity, non-monogamy, and BDSM. I hope to support and advocate for my clients as we work to create spaces that are more inclusive and welcoming to all.

I understand the importance of feeling safe and understood in therapy, especially for LGBTQ+ folks.
Are you feeling dragged down by life's challenges? The Zen proverb 'Let go, or be dragged' reminds us that in order to be free of suffering, we must let go. I am inspired by secular Buddhism and believe that suffering is an innate human experience, not created from life's problems, but from our clinging to "the way things should be" and resisting impermanence and change. I help individuals develop acceptance through mindfulness and other Eastern teachings to provide them with freedom to flow with life and equanimity to remain calm even amongst the most chaotic storms.

But the journey of transformation is worth the time and effort.
I am a License Professional Counselor located in Virginia. I am trained and experienced in conducting individual, couples and family therapy. I have worked in professional settings in the US, and internationally for many years. My clinical orientation is strongly person-centered, with a bent toward existentialism. In the therapeutic setting, I believe that we all journey together, learning and experiencing collectively what happens in the moment. I have strong skills empowering clients confronting life transitions, relationship issues and mood irregularities. I am intimately cognizant of challenges faced by LGBTQ+ persons.

I am passionate about supporting and advocating for LGBTQIA+ folks' unique needs, narratives, experiences, and rights.
Welcome! I'm glad you've found me, and I hope something on my page resonates with you. It is important for me to share that I am a queer therapist - as in I am queer myself and prioritize and adore working with folks in the queer community. I utilize a person-centered, humanistic, strengths-based approach with my clients. My overall desire is to foster and build a safe place where you and I can collaboratively create a trusting therapeutic relationship where tough topics can be processed. Whether implementing “traditional” talk therapy, art therapy, or yoga, I operate from a body-positive, humanistic, trauma-informed perspective.

Accepting new clients! I work primarily with LGBTQ+ people who have experienced trauma and are looking to improve their lives. This might be wanting to feel less anxious or depressed, have healthier relationships, have a deeper knowledge of yourself, or something else. I also have a particular interest in working with clients living with disabilities and chronic conditions, especially those who are "in transition" from non-disabled to disabled. I am a Qualifying WPATH Member and can provide mental health services for individuals looking for support specific to gender-related topics, like social & medical transitioning.

I have particular experience working with LGBT+ identified folks and I'm proud to provide LGBT+ affirming therapy.
I see therapy as time dedicated to unpacking your thoughts and feelings. It's also a space to process past experiences that may have been confusing or painful. I believe it's crucial to have a trusting therapeutic relationship where you are genuinely seen and valued, allowing space for all your identities to be acknowledged and validated. Working with me, you will find an attentive, compassionate, and non-judgmental therapist. My clinical foundation is psychodynamic, relational, cognitive behavioral, and culturally attuned.

I’m currently a doctoral student researching the intersection of the LGBTQIA community, trauma, and substance use at JMU.
Hello! I’m Jen/Jay and I specialize in working with the queer community, trauma, and substance use (you do not need to qualify for all or any of these to come see me). If complex trauma and PTS/D symptoms are things you struggle with, I am trained in EMDR and Brainspotting. In my office you choose what you’d like to address and what is off limits. This is your space to explore and process what you need and want to. You are the only expert of yourself. I like to meet you where you’re at and explore what is challenging and/or painful. My goal is to help my community heal and find wholeheartedness and acceptance, exactly as you are.

My expertise is in working with the LGBTQ+ community, adults who live with addiction, anxiety, trauma, family-of-origin and boundary-setting exploration.
Do you often feel anxious or negatively toward yourself? Do you want to create better relationships or feel more confident? Are there parts of yourself that you haven't explored and you're nervous about diving in? If any of these experiences resonate with you, I could be a great fit for you. We all need validation and a space to be entirely authentic and unedited, but also to be challenged to dig deeper and grow. I will offer you that space to create a stronger, healthier relationship with yourself. My experience has allowed me to work with a wide variety of therapeutic issues and I am passionate about guiding people toward healing.

Clients and colleagues usually describe me as warm, real, direct, with a good sense of humor. Collaboration is important to me and I strive to be transparent, explain my thinking, and make sure I understand you correctly first before I offer insights or suggestions. As a more active therapist I tend to work best with clients who want both supportive and (gently) challenging feedback. I have worked extensively with LGBTQ clients, young adults, health professional students, and clients with immigration backgrounds/experiences. I am able to meet for consultations to write letters for gender affirming surgeries.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
