Sometimes in the midst of struggle, it is hard to be hopeful. When it is hard, it is my privilege to hold that hope for you. I work with both men and women, as well as couples. I am passionate about working with couples through affair recovery and other difficult transitions. I am trained in the Gottman method and use this approach along with techniques from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help my couples reach their relationship goals. I also have a passion for working with trauma, grief and loss; and as a first-generation American, the complexities of a multicultural existence.

I am here to provide a safe space to be heard, to be supported, and to help you identify your unique gifts and strengths. Together we can collaborate to restore balance to your life and let some of the light back in.

If you and your partner are both busy professionals, you might find it hard to connect emotionally and communicate your needs. That's why emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT) could be a great option for you. EFCT is a type of therapy that helps couples identify and change their negative patterns of interaction and create more secure and satisfying bonds. EFCT can help you and your partner understand each other better, express your feelings more openly, and resolve conflicts more effectively. EFCT can also improve your intimacy, trust, and happiness as a couple.

I use the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy to teach couples how to create a healthy partnership.
Did you have a difficult childhood and are now afraid of repeating the same dysfunctional patterns in your own relationship? Are you afraid of intimacy and scared that your partner will reject and/or abandon you? Do you fear they won't "get" you? Maybe you have a hard time understanding yourself and knowing why you treat your partner the way you do. If you did not have the best childhood growing up, then chances are, you do not have a good model of what a healthy, life-long relationship or marriage looks like. Your parents did their best, but they struggled with their own issues and did not know have to have a healthy partnership.

“Nothing to prove, only to share” (Alvin Ailey) is not only a personal creed of mine, but also a defining principle for our virtual therapy haven. You’ve found yourself here again, feeling disconnected, maybe even lost attempting to juggle all the aspects of life. You may even appear to be thriving, but deep down you know along the way you’ve lost yourself. Navigating an ever-changing world and balancing personal and professional roles, can become overwhelming, and leave us feeling powerless.

I believe that authenticity, balance and connection are available to all of us, regardless of past pain or current stuckness. I am guided by the motto “You have to feel it to heal it”, and provide a safe and compassionate space in which individuals and families are invited to process pain, anger, loss, and fear, integrate those experiences and move forward. As a former teacher, child therapist and parent, I understand the importance of supporting caregivers to improve the health of the entire system.

Acknowledging and facing what is painful and no longer working in your life is an act of courage and love. My sincere wish for you is that you find a therapist who is "just right" for you. If you are an individual or a couple, and you are ready to grow and want to work in practical and experiential ways, I may be that therapist. Our first task together is to create a relationship where you experience enough safety, care, and respect to be willing to risk new ways of relating to yourself and others. Bringing a kind, mindful curiosity to what is present will allow us to explore what is challenging and complex.

You feel like you're not a good enough mother, but you're afraid to admit it to anyone so you're feeling more alone than you ever imagined. It wasn't supposed to be like this. How are other people doing it? You're feeling so overwhelmed you can't think straight, and can hardly handle what used to feel like the simplest of tasks... You're wondering if you'll ever get your old life back, if you'll ever be able to go through the day without crying or lashing out at the people you love most. I get it, and I can help.

Because children do not come with a handbook, parents are often wondering if they are parenting correctly. Sometimes your house and your relationships can feel strained due to the challenges of parenting. Parents can feel as if the child is in charge of the emotional barometer of the house. Most parents at some point experience feelings of being overwhelmed and not knowing how to be effective and supportive at the same time. Therapy is a way of taking those first steps toward making positive changes for yourself and your family. By making small changes, you will be able to enjoy a more fulfilling parenting experience.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
