I have focused my career on providing services and working with clients suffering from various forms of trauma. I work with survivors of domestic violence, sexual
assault
, and adult survivors of childhood abuse. My clients are resilient people who are willing to make changes in their lives by making the choices to put themselves first in their lives, making healthy decisions for themselves, and work on their own self worth. My clients are folks who embrace their humanness and gather the courage to work through their toxic emotions such as shame and guilt that hold them back.

I have worked with many, who have faced challenges related to family conflict/discord, minority groups who face cultural/racial concerns, and
sexual abuse
(incest/external).
First, I'd like to say that there is strength in reaching out for support! My clients are diverse and have unique backgrounds and challenges. Many of my clients are young to middle-aged adult women, whom I've greatly enjoyed working with. Though many of our challenges may be interconnected, my work with clients mostly focuses on empowerment, self-compassion, and confidence. My clients are AMAZED by how their focus on increasing self-love, positively reverberates in every aspect of their lives. My clients appreciate my organized yet flexible style and are comforted that our work together is a solution-focused, safe collaboration!

At some time in our life we all struggle with some sort of adversity. I believe we are not judged by adversity but how we handle it. Asking for help is not always easy but it is a sign of strength.
Therapy is a process of self discovery that enables you to recognize unhealthy patterns of behavior and learn effective coping strategies for optimal health and well-being. Life happens to each of us and much of life is out of our control - but how we respond to life's events is completely within our control.

sexual abuse

For me, psychotherapy is offering patience, understanding, insight, acceptance, compassion, relationship, and a secure base to persons suffering from burdens too heavy to carry alone. I compare myself to a container into which my patients pour their unbearable feelings. My task is to detoxify these feelings and make them easier to understand and tolerate. I help my patients to use healthy relationships with others to meet their emotional needs and the emotional needs of others. To establish and maintain healthy relationships, we work in session on understanding our own and others’ mental states (wishes, feelings, intentions) and how these are connected to how we behave toward each other. Relationships tend to work better when we are able to understand our own and others’ minds and how our minds influence how we behave toward each other.

If you are struggling to bounce back from a recent
assault
or fighting to overcome the abuse you experienced as a child, most likely your community and our culture hasn't made it easier.
Working through trauma requires tremendous courage. It is an honor to walk alongside survivors as they confront the past in order to live a more vibrant future. Whether you are dealing with triggers, flashbacks, nightmares, relationship issues, anxiety, chronic health problems, or simply struggling to stop thinking about unpleasant events from the past, trauma can affect us all differently. Trauma therapy looks different for everyone as well. Sessions are structured around the pacing and support you need. I'm here to help dispel shame around the patterns we have developed in response to adversity and support self-empowerment.

Relationship issues,
sexual abuse
and associated trauma, gay and lesbian concerns, and grief and loss continue to be major areas of focus.
Having been trained in a humanistic/holistic model of therapy (Experiential, Gestalt, Psychodynamic, Family Systems), I have adhered to what is now called an “integrative” approach to mental health issues. Specifically, when I engage with a client we focus on the interaction of all the dimensions of his or her life, i.e., biological, psychological, social, behavioral, and spiritual. Subsequently, we embark on an exciting journey together to explore a path that leads to a more optimal state of well-being and a greater sense of wholeness.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
