My practice as a therapist is founded on social justice and feminist frameworks, as well as relational-cultural theory.
Are you struggling with mood, identity, or relational issues that feel overwhelming? Do you have a difficult time accessing your feelings? Art can provide an alternative language for clients who struggle with verbal processing or other aspects of traditional talk therapy. No previous art knowledge or skill is required. I work with young people interested in utilizing art and the art making process to facilitate the therapeutic growth. Through building a strong therapeutic alliance with my clients, they are able to feel safe and empowered to have agency within therapy and in their lives.

I use an eclectic approach, incorporating feminist, relational-cultural, psychodynamic, and person-centered theories.
Let’s face it–shit has hit the fan. Between the pandemic, systems of oppression, and so much uncertainty...we’re all trying to figure it out. Plus, you have things you were already dealing with– depression, trauma responses, grief, existential questions...Maybe you’re tired of “blank slate” therapists. You want to explore healing through art and creativity instead of just talking. You want space to process your past & present experiences and to deepen your understanding of and reconnect with yourself. You’re looking for someone who "gets" it– who validates your lived experience and who has been on that side of the couch.

Are you facing a new medical diagnosis or grieving the life that you had before the diagnosis? A massive health change can leave you feeling isolated, anxious, and unsure of where to turn. You might also feel overwhelmed by all that there is to do now: How do I talk to my children and family? What if work finds out? How will I ever get through this? If you have recently received a chronic, acute, or terminal medical diagnosis, there is the added stress of navigating the medical system and the uncertainty of what is ahead. Eventually, the distress, anxiety, and sadness that comes as a result of these changes can feel all-consuming.

It is my goal to provide a supportive and gently challenging environment, where a client can expect to make therapeutic change. My role in therapy is to work as a team with my client to identify therapeutic goals, identify how to best reach the goals and explore how to manage the social, emotional and environmental barriers in the individual's life.

Ready to get into it? Taking the first step into a therapeutic setting requires enormous vulnerability, as well as a great deal of strength, and I strive to make every client feel warm and welcomed. Therapy is an opportunity to create the change in your life that has always been possible – even if it may not feel that way to you right now. My therapeutic style is straightforward, honest, and goal-oriented, and more often than not, there is room for humor and laughter in a therapy session. I am currently licensed in IL and NJ!

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
