Hello, my name is Sabrina Brown, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I believe that the first step in any change is being able to recognize the issue. With my approach to therapy, we will work together to activate the change you want to see. I create a safe space for us to communicate by being mindful and aware of tone, body language, and openness. I was interested in therapy because I wanted to make an impact in people's lives. I like to allow my clients to use the autonomy of creating goals for themselves while encouraging and guiding the client.

As an emergency responder, trauma is your life. You see horror after horror. Hypervigilance and "sucking it up" are your superpowers. You're proud of it. You came into law enforcement, fire, or the medical field feeling indestructible, but now life feels torn at the seams. You experience fitful nights of sleep, your emotions are all over the place, and you lack motivation. On top of that, friendships are not what they used to be, family is annoying, and your marriage seems to be falling apart. Lately, it’s been difficult to focus at work as a sense of fear has crept in. Everything important has lost meaning and you feel alone.

My professional voyage has traversed healthcare, the realm of workers' compensation, and the corridors of education, all of which have endowed me with a rich tapestry of skills. I’m Kathryn Calcaterra, PhD, a clinical psychologist specializing in the art of healing. I focus on patients who grapple with the weight of chronic pain, dance with the shadows of anxiety and depression, and bear the scars of trauma. I typically treat adults and elders (65+), often who have a physical injury followed by an emotional sequela of chronic pain. I also treat patients struggling with anxiety and depression.

I am a true believer that it takes a village to make it in this world. However, many people don’t have that in their lives and need guidance and support from outside sources, which I have done for over 20 years as a psychotherapist and community leader. Counseling individuals, families, and marriages, I help resolve conflicts, identify patterns of symptoms, strengthen relationships, pursue new adventures, and increase self-awareness. Through the therapeutic bond, clients have an opportunity to trust me and create a deeper relationship with themselves.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
