“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional." - Haruki Murakami. At times, life brings us challenges and hurdles that we feel ill equipped to handle on our own. I feel honored to work with individuals as they navigate the many changes life brings-adolescence, transitioning to adulthood, marriage and family, career changes, divorce, loss of loved ones, and aging. Often, these changes create anxiety, depression, anger, and feeling "stuck" - and we may not know how to move forward. My clients seek to understand themselves better, to change old, unhelpful patterns of thinking and belief, and create lives full of meaning and joy!

Have you tried traditional talk therapy and still need something more? I work with people who want a different approach, partnering with nature, play, energy, and animal-assisted therapy to help support the healing journey. Clients come seeking support for various reasons but I specialize in trauma and attachment, parenting for children who are struggling, empowerment and self-esteem. Healing happens emotionally, spiritually, cognitively and physically through expressive arts, yoga, and partnering with nature and animals. I have a laid-back style and you will often find me dressed in sweats or yoga pants.

Have you experienced a loss that seems too big to survive? Do you have a gnawing feeling that society is getting grief wrong; that the messages you have heard to "move on," "just choose joy," and, "aren't you over this yet?" are not honoring to your experience? I have focused on grief and trauma-informed theory, aligned myself with mentors devoted to the field of bereavement, and am a certified Compassionate Bereavement Care provider through MISS Foundation/Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Family Trust/Center for Loss and Trauma. I am EMDR trained and I provide CISS (critical incident support services).

You may be experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, or ADHD, and are feeling like you just can’t catch a break. You’re overwhelmed, constantly on edge, and making it through each day is like running a marathon that you were unable to train for. Dealing with all of this inside of you makes you feel so alone, believing that no one understands how you’re feeling. I work best with those of you who are experiencing work-related stress and relationship issues, as a result of feeling down, swamped, stressed out, or too scattered. What you want to get from therapy is understanding and solid solutions for getting back to your "normal" self.

Life changes can leave us all feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or even anxious and depressed. Whether it is an unexpected illness, relationship betrayal, grief, loss, aging or changes in family dynamics you can become lost, feel alone and be uncertain of what to do. When we find ourselves in these painful places it can be almost impossible to believe that things will get better and going through a transition can be a painful process but with support it can lead to tremendous growth.

My work specializes in individual and couples therapy for those experiencing conflict in their relationship. I anticipate sessions with clients speaking from a position of "rightness" early in therapy with a smooth transition to deepened listening while recognizing personal missteps and growth considerations. As a client, you will be expected to be the main character in your narrative and over time place less change demands on the supportive roles in your life. You will speak with purpose and listen with the intention of learning to step into the next chapter of your relationship with yourself and your partner.

As a therapist, I am certain in the power of therapy and how it can help support one’s journey when working through their life experiences. It can be difficult and vulnerable to make the decision to incorporate therapy into your routine. Showing up for yourself in this way is a vital step you are taking. My aim is to emphasize the importance of meeting you where you are by providing a non-judgmental space to help you feel comfortable in working through prominent issues. I believe in the significance of building and maintaining therapeutic rapport by promoting relational communication with my clients.

Do you find it hard to trust in relationships, even when you’re in a good one? Or perhaps you experience the opposite, where you’re drawn to people who aren’t good for you. Many people aren’t aware of how much their childhood experiences affect them as adults. Unresolved trauma from the past can continue to impact your relationships with your partners, children, friends, and even co-workers. It can seep into other areas of your life as well, keeping you from progressing towards your personal and career goals. Fortunately, with the right support you can interrupt harmful patterns while healing the wounds that caused them.

As a counselor, I look to the Latin phrase Cura Personalis as a guide. This translates as "care for the whole person". This approach calls for individualized attention to the needs of others, a distinct respect for their unique circumstances, and an appropriate appreciation for their particular gifts and insights. With this phrase in mind, I believe that everyone has the tools within them to find healing and create a better more fulfilling life, the challenge is uncovering those tools to begin the journey. As a counselor, I am committed to walking alongside my clients every step of the way.

I specialize in supporting men and women as they walk through life transitions and are experiencing some of the symptoms described above.
Are you someone who finds him/herself experiencing feelings of dissatisfaction and restlessness? You know something is wrong but you can’t put your finger on it. Maybe you’re children are grown and you realize you’ve lost yourself in the process of raising them and you’re wondering what’s next for you. Are you feeling reckless, lonely, misunderstood, exhausted and easily irritated? You feel like an imposter at times. You feel apathetic toward things that once brought you pleasure and joy. You might even be suffering from symptoms of panic, anxiety, or depression as a result of this uncertain time in your life.

You feel overwhelmed, tired, and maybe numb. You try to do it all, but it's not working. You feel stuck and constantly worry about things that have hurt you in the past and it's difficult to know how to move on and find joy again. You are surrounded by people, but feel lonely inside. You don't have to feel alone, stuck or overwhelmed. You have everything you need right now to change your life, sometimes we just need a guide, some support or a little help with the right tools to help us identify and change patterns that don't work. Start a new chapter.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
