I believe therapy works best when the therapist and client work together to identify, understand, and work through the issues in their lives. I studied at Brenau University and am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I work with adolescents, teenagers, and young adults. I'm passionate about working with LGBTQ+ individuals and couples. I believe in partnering with my clients to assist them in understanding their emotions and behaviors. I am trained in cognitive behavioral techniques, and I like to use creative interventions in addition to open dialogues in session to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all of my clients.

I am pretty traditional in my beliefs about the purpose of therapy, but not your traditional therapist.I do not sit with a notebook and write down everything you say with a hmm at the end before I collect my fee.I am interactive and even directive sometimes. I guess that's why I work well with teenagers:) So, if you want therapy to be fun, I'm your gal. My specialty area has been adolescents and addiction for over 30 years, but I see adults too (codependence, divorce, parent alienation) etc. I am also a past President of LPCA, and operate a new virtual business called ProjectEvolve.com. It is an alternative to social media for kids.

My focus in working with clients is to help foster personal awareness, to draw out inner strengths, and provide tools to cope with life's challenges. All of us have certain thoughts and behaviors that are unhealthy and at times can even be destructive or keep us stuck. My hope is that the therapeutic relationship creates a deeper, richer understanding and acceptance of the underlying issues in one's life.

I believe that one of the bravest things we can do is learning how to love ourselves through the process of owning our own storying. Often times the first brave step is just reaching out. Society tends to view therapy as something you need if you have “failed” on your own. However, I tend to think the counseling process is one where we invite someone else to walk alongside us on our journey of figuring out who we are. I believe that as humans we are designed for relationship, and we aren’t intended to do and figure it all out alone. When it comes to couples work, I believe that having a third party can make us stronger.

Going through trauma, grief, depression, anxiety and/or an eating disorder can be very lonely and isolating. People sometimes feel that they have no one who really understands what they are going through. I have worked with many clients who have experienced tragedies and difficult times in their lives, and maybe you can relate to some of those difficult feelings. I'm here to tell you that you don't have to go through this alone! You may be looking for a place to heal, to explore painful memories, to receive support. There is strength in seeking help and I would love to be by your side to support you.

No matter how big or how small, your struggle is valid. So often guys walk into the office thinking they need to carry around everything as if their pain is a badge of honor. You don’t have to carry everything. You don’t have to be alone in your struggle. It is ok to ask for help. Therapy can be a place where you come to learn more about the “why you do what you do” or it can be a place where you can talk without being judged or even fixed. I want to be a part of ushering in a new age of males. Ones that are willing to understand who they are. Ones that are willing to deal with their pain, so others don’t take the brunt.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
