Welcome! I'm Joanna. I work with adolescents (16+) & adults, most frequently young adults. I particularly enjoy working with transitional issues - changes in school, jobs, family, relationships, identity, etc. Often, my clients are dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, and/or interpersonal conflict. I value working with folks with a range of backgrounds, races, faiths, genders, sexualities, and lifestyles. My work sees people through a systems lens, recognizes the oppressive barriers to mental wellness, and encourages reflection on cultural impact. My ideal client is open minded, patient, and motivated for change.

I look forward to working with these individuals as well as other adults with trauma, anxiety, or depression.
Many people suffer unhappiness related to perfectionism and "people pleasing". Unhelpful ways of thinking in the present often started as an appropriate way of dealing with stress in the past. I help the client to identify sources of unhelpful thinking, and understand how they are not adaptive today. Then, I work with the client's sense of self, personal values, and goals to find better ways of thinking and coping with today's stressors. Throughout the process, I emphasize the need for acceptance and patience with ourselves.

I particularly enjoy working with teens and young adults dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, and issues around body image, self-esteem, and interpersonal conflicts.
Life often feels messy and complicated and we can get stuck in the same thought patterns, interpersonal conflicts, or ways of seeing the world that keep us from living as our best selves. My goal is to support clients in managing their stressors and building skills to show up in the world that feels authentic to them. As a therapist, I strive to create a safe space for clients to do the work of finding their own voice, processing through their struggles and issues, identifying and using coping skills, and showing up in relationships in an authentic way.

For more than 20 years I have specialized in addressing anxiety, depression, early trauma and other mental health challenges by using neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback) and psychotherapy.
My ideal client is the teen or adult that has had significant distress from emotional trauma, anxiety, mood and attentional disorders. Most clients have previously tried many types of therapies, including drug therapies, but continue to struggle. By addressing brain function with neurofeedback in addition to therapy, I have had over 90% success helping my clients to overcome or manage their emotional/mental health challenges.

Your symptoms may appear as persistent depression, anxiety, anger, or addiction.
Do you feel stuck? Do you often find yourself feeling sad, angry, or irritable? Perhaps you struggle to even know what or how you should feel. When we’ve experienced traumas, we learn to live in fear, doubt ourselves, and question our self-worth. We can even lose our sense of who we are. These struggles might be new, or so old that you can’t remember feeling any other way. Regardless of how you got here, you are ready for change. You don’t have to do this on your own. I have helped many people find their strength, confidence, and a sense of meaning in their lives.

I have extensive experience working with clients who are dealing with adjustment disorders, depression, anxiety, disruptive behaviors, ADHD, anger management, bereavement and grief, separation and divorce, struggling with issues regarding life transitions, sexual orientation, job satisfaction, aging, and self-esteem.
It is natural to have moments in life when you feel depressed or anxious, and especially if you are in a certain stage of life which requires more support, or if life simply threw you a curve ball. Everyone needs to be able to set aside time for themselves, process through their experiences, and then work towards identifying what they need and how to get there. I provide a comfortable, safe, non-judgmental space in which to do that work, collaboratively and creatively. I want to empower you and to help you feel like, "I've got this. I can get through it." Because you can.

Current Openings! I work with clients who are struggling with the effects of chronic stress, trauma, and difficult family or close relationships to have greater self-worth and compassion in their present life. I can help clients learn to sort through and manage the overwhelming or confusing emotions, and the outdated beliefs & behavioral habits that stem from trauma, anxiety and depression. I often help clients who come from abusive family backgrounds where their emotions didn't matter, or were dismissed, to learn more about themselves, feel more belonging, and to take action toward their true goals and values.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
