I have special expertise in working with compulsive eating and other eating disorders.
The beginning of personal change is knowing that a different experience is available. This is the seed of hope. The therapeutic experience is a collaboration between two individuals who both bring rich experience and knowledge into a therapeutic relationship. The situation that we find ourselves in is not our destiny. By choosing to participate in therapy, you are moving in the direction of creating the life you want to live.

I work with people who are struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating, and binge eaters with diabetes.
Have you found yourself in a nagging cycle of worry--experiencing sleeplessness, poor concentration, avoiding once enjoyed activities, and friends? These symptoms maybe due to depression or anxiety. Eating disorders, grief, loss, women's issues, life coaching, and couples counseling are some of the issues addressed in my office. I can offer guidance as to how our gut can affect the health and functioning of our bodies and of our brains--thus affecting mental health. There is a bi-directional relationship between our brain & gut. As a registered dietitian, I can provide the nutritional guidance to keep your gut healthy.

One of the few constants in life is change. If you are in a period of transition you may be feeling confused, anxious, or depressed, and alone with your struggles. Times of transition may include: Divorce, educational or career changes, changing stages in our children's or parent's lives, tackling addictions, issues of grief and/or loss. Transitions, while challenging and often stressful, with good professional support can be opportunities for true personal growth and transformation. I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental and confidential place for us to explore together how best to help you to feeling better.

You want to engage with life and be present with your loved ones, but it all seems like too much effort. You need someone to guide you out of the dark and help you find your path to wellness.

I have experience working with kids who have been exposed to all levels of trauma, as well as with individuals of all ages to treat eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
You know your kid is struggling, but so are you. She’s not a bad kid, but she wears you out. The school thinks she needs discipline and testing, but you feel like maybe she just needs help adjusting to life. Every time she gets in trouble at school by fighting or disrespecting adults, you wonder what you did wrong and how can you ever fix what’s broken before it’s too late. You’re losing your patience, but you also want to yell at everyone to just leave her alone; she’s still so little and she’s been through so much. You’re really trying. I hear you and I want to help.

My specialities include anxiety and worry, problems with mood, eating disorders, difficulties managing everyday stress, and coping with loss.
Currently accepting new clients, both in person and virtual. Every person should find a therapist who feels like a good fit for them, someone who listens and understands them, and also helps them to make the changes they want to make in their life. There are enormous stressors on most people these days, and therapy is a great place to get support and develop better ways to cope. I have had over 20 years experience working with children, teens, and adults and my approach varies depending on each person's individual needs. I am genuinely committed to helping people get what they want from life.

I am a clinical psychologist with expertise in treating addictions, eating disorders, trauma, anxiety, depression, body image issues and difficulties with emotion regulation. I teach skills that increase life satisfaction, happiness, self-confidence, curiosity and gratitude. When life doesn't meet our expectations or painful situations occur, many people become self-critical and fight against emotions such as anger, loneliness, fear or shame. It is this lack of acceptance that increases suffering. Mindfulness and self-compassion involve responding with kindness to our own pain, thereby reducing suffering.

Is depression or anxiety keeping you from engaging with life as you want to? Are your relationships suffering because of communication issues or mental health problems? Have you tried therapy in the past but stopped because it felt impersonal or formulaic? Dealing with mental health issues affects how you think about yourself, interact with loved ones, and how much effort you can use to chase your goals. If you’re ready to find positive solutions to your mental health and relationship issues, therapy with a person-centered approach may help.

Over 20 years of clinical experience working with adolescents, teenagers, and young adults struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and addiction in various treatment settings. Diversity and multicultural issues are embedded in everything we do and contribute to presenting problems. I am conscious of varying decision-making preferences, the role of family dynamics, stages of life, socioeconomic status, and issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity. As well as the stigma associated with seeking mental health services.

My work as a psychotherapist is rooted in a profound belief that by recognizing and honoring our complex, messy life stories with honesty and gentleness, we lay the foundation to heal the obstacles preventing us from building fulfilling, meaningful lives. Throughout life, we all create narratives about ourselves to help us survive. These narratives are shaped by myriad factors (individual life experiences, relationships, intergenerational legacies, and experiences of oppression/privilege, belonging/rejection, among others). Over time, our narratives and coping mechanisms fall short. We wonder, what went wrong? What's wrong with me?

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
