Issues I address include relationship struggles (both traditional and non-traditional), problems associated with adolescence, anxiety, depression and parenting.
Making the decision to see a therapist is not an easy one, and it often takes a fair amount of courage to do so. For those who decide that therapy is appropriate, the outcome can be positive, bringing them more intimacy and fulfillment. Therapy provides the opportunity to improve communication, reduce stress, anxiety and anger, and improve the most important relationship we have....the one we have with ourselves.

Although successful in working with couples and families, I have also been effective in working with individuals and adolescents.
All relationships experience "bumpy road" from time to time and it can seem as though your partner/ spouse suddenly becomes a "stranger" and neither of you feel understood, appreciated or respected. For the past 30 years, I've been serving the mid-peninsula community, providing a safe environment wherein clients can hear and begin to relate to one another once more. By slowing down hostile rhetoric, my clients begin to listen, better relate and move closer together in a more loving manner. My style is casual, humorous and effective and I welcome the opportunity to help you rediscover the better side of your loving selves.

Working with children, teens, families or couples using cognitive behavioral therapy strategies helps therapy take place within the office and allows progress to continue through the use of "homework assignments.
My practice is based on the assumption that all people need support and that progress toward achieving personal goals should be seen within a few sessions. If you're looking for a therapist, it shows you are ready to do the work and that is a great start! I am passionate about collaborating with kids, teens and family to work through issues. I truly believe a little time and effort focused on improving relationships can help so much. Contact me (email is best!) and we can set up a time to talk.

The treatment I offer you is also based on developing a respectful, trusting relationship that will support a deep dive into the internal tendencies that influence how you live and relate to others.
Starting therapy can be daunting, but once you open yourself to it, you enter a self-discovery endeavor that can free you from limiting emotional beliefs that block your life. You will feel more confident, less anxious, or depressed and develop more self-acceptance. I work with adults and couples with diverse ethnic, cultural backgrounds, sexual identities, and religious beliefs who face trauma, anxiety, depression, mood and personality disorders, relationship conflicts, parenting issues, aging, and grief. I will focus on treating your symptoms, identifying patterns that led to emotional and relational conflicts, and beyond.

I received my Master's degree from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California and have completed training with children, adults, couples, groups and families.
Therapy means many different things to different people. For some it is a journey of growth, self-awareness, and healing. For others it is necessary for them to survive. For some it is something they are mandated to do, and for many it is something they really want to do. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, I am here to support you through your process. Therapy is about where you are, where you want to go, what you want to explore, and joining you on your experience. I am here to listen, to guide you, focus you, support you and push you when needed.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
