Do you feel stuck out on your own private island? Everyone feels lonely occasionally and some people enjoy solitude, but loneliness is the feeling of one’s social needs not being met. To understand what those social needs are we can dive into your personal needs. Are your emotional struggles limiting your life choices or stopping you from expressing yourself authentically? It is different for everyone, but noticing personal challenges and how you deal with them is part of therapy. We can work together to identify your core challenges and and untangle your emotional struggles that keep you from living the life you want.

Tried everything and can't seem to make it happen for you? We are all presented with challenges, and sometimes we just need a little help clarifying our directions and finding strategies that will help us navigate those challenges. I will listen respectfully to your situation and together we will find your solutions. Sometimes we feel that our own problems are too either too insignificant or too overwhelming to bring to someone else. But, if you've been struggling and had enough, please do not hesitate to reach out for help.

A sense of belonging. Feeling seen and understood. Feeling comfortable with your actions and responses to loved ones, co-workers, and acquaintances. To make meaning of how your life has gone so far and, perhaps, find some peace within your story. Sometimes these real, human desires can feel daunting without some support... My approach is extremely genuine, compassionate, and ... real. I have many years of experience working with clients who have encountered challenges in life transitions, identity/sexuality, relationships, historical family trauma, depression/anxiety, and questioning what it means to live their truth in life.

Overall, I work to establish strong and safe connections with my clients in order to assist them in deep healing work. While my approach is eclectic, I tend to pull ideas from somatic psychology while working from a humanistic, attachment-focused perspective. I work best with clients who want to explore how their patterns began and are commited to feeling better. I have training in Somatic Experiencing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; as well as, experience working in residential and out-patient Eating Disorder Treatment.

I am passionate about helping people overcome feelings of anxiety, shame, depression, or perfectionism related to feelings of inadequacy or worthlessness. I empower people to shed feelings of guilt or over-responsibility for others. I help people develop greater compassion within themselves, as well in marriage, parenting, and other relationships. Yes, it takes work to make changes, but I provide skills and a safe place to make and sustain those changes. Studies show when we live with more compassion, we have less anxiety, depression, and conflict. I love helping people on this journey to live with peace.

I am an empathetic, humanistic, compassion-focused therapist. But more importantly, I am a fellow human desiring to hold space for you, your emotions, your lived experiences, and your story. As hurt occurs within the context of relationship, I believe healing can also be found there as well. Together, we will build a strong and safe therapeutic relationship where you can find solace and clarity. You'll learn to get comfortable with your emotions, explore limiting beliefs you've picked up along the way, and identify unhelpful patterns that keep you from elevating your life.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
