As we encounter new life stages, we often come face to face with our deepest doubts and fears. Finding the courage to work through these to achieve lasting personal growth requires a safe and structured space for telling our stories and unraveling the knots that cause us pain. As a therapist with twenty years of experience, my approach to providing such a space is client-focused, holistic, and collaborative. I specialize in helping my clients navigate academic challenges, intimate relationships, family dynamics, cultural integration, and life transitions.

Immediate openings! Sometimes we get caught up in the messiness of life and forget to enjoy it! I get it, life can be stressful. All of our feelings are normal but sometimes we feel them more intense and they might even make our day to day lives extra challenging (anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, low motivation… sound familiar?) You are deserving of a life you enjoy living and I am here to help you get back to your best, authentic self.

My clinical approach is integrative, although my interventions often focus on acceptance and self-compassion while empowering my clients to make the changes they would like to see in their lives. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you’ve said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Maya Angelou. This quote had become my life motto, as it is so true, the way you have been made to feel by another is what can make or break any person. Adults who have experienced trauma, substance abuse, mental heath, emotional exhaustion, and life’s various curveballs deserve to be heard and treated in an environment that is understanding, empathetic, safe, stable, supportive, and non judgmental to begin their journey to heal.

Everyone deserves to have a good day and a better tomorrow. I realize that taking on a personal change out of desire or necessity is often harder than it sounds. I work with all ages, life-stages, and conditions. People arrive with their bag of “stuff”: hopes, disappointments, wounds, trauma, diagnoses, and connections. I start where you are and work with you to create a path to a place of well-being.

I believe in meeting you where you are at in life and developing a plan that is tailored to meet your specific needs. Every individual is unique and requires a different approach to reach their goals. It is my opinion that the best way to begin therapy is through empathy and a true understanding of someone's story in order to build a powerful therapeutic alliance, create trust and develop rapport. My approach as a therapist tends to be somewhat non traditional, informal and laid back. You are the expert of your life. My role is to listen and understand in order to help you develop confidence and skills to conquer life's challenges.

Clients who work with me are interested in deepening awareness, strength, resiliency, and healing.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
