I am an integrative therapist that tailors treatment to meet your unique needs using approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT, compassion focused therapy, and mindfulness techniques.
The challenges we experience everyday can be overwhelming. I believe that therapy can be a safe environment to help foster growth, healing, and support. I strive to provide that safe therapeutic space where we can work collaboratively to allow you to freely explore, question, and process to help you achieve the quality of life that you desire and deserve. My research has been in parenting. I enjoy working with parents, helping them understand their current parenting styles, and working together to constructively modify their skills to help them build a stronger, positive relationship with their children.

Clients who are ready to explore their deeper selves and go beyond cognitive talk therapy are ideal for my style of therapy! Those who feel stuck, squeezed, torn, or burdened and wanting to free themselves from a limited experience to live as their authentic selves are clients who might enjoy my compassion focused and creative expression therapy approach. I use non-traditional methods such as body movement, art making, sound, mindfulness practices to help clients process difficult emotions, face challenges, and make difficult choices.

The idea of seeking therapy can be a scary process. That’s why as a therapist I always meet my clients where they are in their therapeutic process. I take on a team approach to let my client know that they aren’t alone. Together we can accomplish many obstacles.

Throughout my career, my primary focus has been working with clients with either severe traumatic experiences and/or extensive trauma histories.I love working and supporting people through life transitions and exploration of identity. I have worked with many clients who hold identities within the LGBTQIA2+ community. I can relate to many of the challenges experienced by members of marginalized, oppressed, and minority communities. A portion of my professional career has included working with primarily BIPOC clients in Detroit, veterans, people living in different-sized bodies, and those who have concerns around foster care/adoption.

It makes sense that you’re overwhelmed, exhausted, and burned out. It makes sense that you’re angry! You’ve been working SO HARD to survive in a world that says there’s only one right way to be! My approach to therapy is rooted in a simple idea: that you are not broken; the systems we live under are. As a gay, neurodivergent therapist, I welcome clients from diverse backgrounds, including those who identify as queer, trans, nonbinary, and/or neurodivergent. Together, we navigate the complexities of a culture that too often marginalizes these identities, favoring neurotypicality, heteronormativity, whiteness, and conformity.

Sometimes we all need somebody to genuinely meet us where we are at in life with radical acceptance and compassion for who we are and where we want to go from here. But searching for the right person to connect with can be a daunting prospect, especially if you or your loved ones have been met with societal rejection and systematic oppression. As such, my primary goal in therapy is to cultivate an inclusive, warming environment where you can safely and freely express your authentic self, which is why you deserve to know a little about me as well.

These are difficult and troubling times for many of us. There is a lot of uncertainty about the future, and a fair number of people feel isolated, and afraid. I have over 20 years' experience as a psychotherapist as well as training in theatre, especially improvisation. I can offer you skills to get past fear, challenge your thinking, and connect with all of your possibilities. I use a combination of evidence-based techniques, including improvisation and creative arts, to help you get past your "comfort zone."

I help highly-sensitive women heal trauma, navigate inner conflict, and find a deeper sense of connection with themselves and others in order to live more fulfilling lives. Using a somatically integrative approach to therapy, I guide clients towards self-compassion and out of shame cycles and old disempowering narratives. In sessions, I invite clients into experimental practices where we draw our attention to your embodied experience and explore your thoughts, images, movements, emotions and sensations as they arise. Always core to my work is: empathy, consent, attunement, presence, and curiosity.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
