I use EMDR, CBT and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy to help you achieve real change in days so you can feel better, faster.
Do you find yourself playing situations over and over again in your mind? Does it feel like weekly 50 minute therapy simply hasn’t been enough, no matter what you do? You’ve read self-help books and maybe even been to therapy before, but nothing has gotten to the very bottom of your concerns and led to the level of growth and change you’re looking for in your life and relationships. Maybe you’re needing help right now, and you don’t want to spend months or even years in the traditional weekly model of therapy treatment to feel better. Learn more about what we offer at Michigan-EMDR.com!

My practice is based on a cognitive-behavioral approach, meaning I believe that our thoughts, emotions, and actions impact one another directly.
Have a cup of tea or coffee. Sit back, and maybe even wrap in a blanket. Take this time to go wherever you need to go emotionally, knowing this is a judgment free room. As your therapist, I will not be able to solve your problems for you. Actually, I would not want to even if I could. I do not presume that I have answers to your problems, or that my way is the best or only way. I fully believe that you have the answers you need within you, we just need to uncover them. I will walk with you for as long as you want and need.

The search for a therapist can be overwhelming, but it’s a courageous first step toward improving your life and overall well-being. Often, people know they are not happy, but they need some help to discover why. Since the success of therapy largely depends on how you feel toward your therapist, I strive to create an environment that feels nonjudgmental, safe, and comfortable. I work alongside you in the therapy, guiding you to your own conclusions with thought-provoking questions and comments, rather than telling you what decisions are best for you. Working in that manner helps build confidence in yourself and your decisions.

I believe it is a difficult decision to reach out for support from another person. In so doing, therapy not only needs to be a gentle guidance towards a happier lifestyle, but it also needs to incorporate challenges. In working with individuals, couples and families, I enjoy creating a balance of both of these concepts. Shifting our perceptions and changing our behaviors is not a simple process for anyone. I work with parents, teenagers and even our littlest people during stressful life situations including depression, anxiety, anger management, marital issues, women's issues, and processing traumatic events.

A wise philosopher once said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Small changes, even increasing self-awareness, can collect and snowball into life-changing transformations. These changes and transformations currently may be hard to imagine or fully believe, and we can still choose to bravely take that step. Whatever length your journey, I offer support along the road and a safe space for exploration, expression, insight, and transformation.

Life can be messy, it can catch us off guard. We can find ourselves treading water and the things that used to keep us afloat aren’t working quite so well. Old wounds can dull our spark. If we’re human, we’ve all been there. I work with children, teens, and adults who are experiencing anxiety and depression, grief due to a death or those anticipating a loss, a life threatening medical diagnosis, anaphylactic food allergies and accompanying stressors, trauma, and parents with perinatal mood disorders.

If we’re honest, life is hard and can sometimes feel overwhelming. We don’t always have the support or space to process what’s happening, which makes everything more challenging. As a therapist, I aim to create a compassionate, safe, nonjudgmental space for you just to be you. One of my mottos is, “It’s okay not to be okay.” I want to walk alongside you whether you are processing sudden transitions, past trauma, or desire to learn and explore emotions for the first time. I use a person-centered approach and evidence-based practices to guide therapy and offer tools to help manage overwhelming feelings and situations.

Couples with young kiddo are particularly at risk for marriage and family strife because they are so busy, and because there is so much that is new to their brains, emotions and relationship. Figuring out how to be both mom and dad as well as husband and wife is often overwhelming and troubling. Tension builds when the relationship energy gets split between kiddos needs (and there are a lot of them!) and marriage needs (and those are valid as well). The energy to figure out how to integrate all those needs, wants, wishes becomes divided and divisive. Disconnected and discontent brew and relationship trouble stews. What to do?

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
