My approach to therapy includes using skills from CBT, DBT, and CPT to help understand and change thoughts and behaviors.
If you’re looking to have the space to explore issues and experiences that have impacted your life, I may be a good fit for you! I work with individuals struggling to navigate mood disorders, anxiety, history of trauma, and interpersonal distress. Additionally, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I have first-hand experience with the challenges and fears that come with developing, growing, and accepting your identity. I believe healing can happen through processing your experiences and receiving empathy, support, and honest feedback.

My empowering approach to psychotherapy draws from the insights of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT),Somatic Experiencing, mindfulness-based practices, Jungian and depth psychology, and, for those interested, dream analysis.
I offer an interactive, practical, comprehensive, respectful and resourceful style of therapy that helps people shift their focus from wondering, "What's wrong with me?" to asking a very different question: "What's right about me?" My sessions, for both individuals and couples, are designed to identify effective and practical problem-solving strategies, as well as to uncover inner strengths and healing resources to address your concerns. I am open-minded and value cultural and religious diversity.

I am trained in several approaches and am able to draw from a range of interventions including EMDR, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and insight-oriented.
People decide to begin therapy for a variety of reasons. Many have had damaging experiences that they are unable to put behind them. Some feel stuck or make the same mistakes over and over and are unsure why. Others have chronic feelings of low self-worth. Others suffer from excessive worry or panic attacks.

To help facilitate this, we'll draw on established techniques in life coaching, cognitive restructuring (CBT), mindfulness, emotional regulation (DBT), and interpersonal communication strategies.
As a semi-retired practitioner, my aim is to provide affordable and effective counseling (not clinical therapy) to folks needing to get ‘unstuck’. Our focus will center largely on how to manage/enhance day to day challenges such as relationships, dealing with anxiety and depression, and rediscovery of your sense of purpose, meaning and direction in life. Our work together will be a collaborative process that builds on both your emerging insights and the application of concrete steps that lead you to making choices and taking steps that promote your ability to be happy in your life.

I believe in working cooperatively with people to help them achieve balance, personal growth, and to reach their personal goals. Many people feel isolated and their anxiety or depression prevent them from being their best self. We all have the ability to learn, grow and reach our highest potential, and we cannot do it alone. Together we can identify strengths, work through challenges, and develop the skills to achieve a higher level of peace and contentment.

I believe psychotherapy can be transformative. Over and over again, I have been deeply impressed by people's capacity for personal growth and change. And, I have been moved by the courage and strength people have shown by their entering therapy in the first place, and by the trust they have placed in me and in the work we do together. I strive to create an atmosphere of trust, respect, and compassion that allows people to become more self-aware, to find healing, and to living a more fulfilling life.

You're slamming the alarm clock; it was another night of broken sleep. You're feeling drained and wishing for a moment of peace and happiness. You are constantly giving to others when you're running low and rarely have time for yourself. You feel pressures and stress piling up and weighing on your shoulders. You want to reach out for help but are scared of being vulnerable and driving people away. At night when you lay down to sleep, the thoughts are racing and the worries return. All that you want is understanding, support, and acceptance.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
