I work mostly with teens, having been a troubled and angry depressed teen myself. I have seen people take the broken pieces of their lives and create beauty. My Motivation for this work is to help serve and support underserved populations, specifically the Latinx population. I know the importance of finding a therapist who understands your cultural experience. Having that cultural connection provides an unspoken understanding within the counseling relationship which helps create better rapport and comfort to be able to open up on your mental health or relational concerns. After all, one of our most basic needs is the need for belonging. I want to make sure that my clients not only feel they belong in my office, but in our community.

All people need to learn tangible emotional skills and tools to create the healthy, conscious life and relationships they truly desire. As humans, we all have emotional issues. Issues are never the problem. The problem is that we, commonly, have not been taught the very skills that allow us to identify and, most importantly, deal successfully with our own set of issues. That leaves us acting out those issues, creating a disruption to our health, growth and important relationships. No need to suffer those disappointments unnecessarily. Anyone can learn to deal with their obstacles to creating true harmony in life.

We are all wired for connection. Your quality-of-life hinges on the relationships you have. Are you struggling to connect with your partner/child? Confused about what they needs to feel better? Or how to help them manage anxiety or trauma? Do you feel distant from your partner? Stuck in your own trauma? Is your family constantly fighting and parenting is stressful? Is your child/partner neurodivergent and you aren’t sure how to support their emotional/sensory needs? If any of these are you, I offer a safe space to help you connect to your partner or child and heal from past trauma that may be impacting your present relationships.

My ideal client is a teen, adult or couple who is self aware, motivated, and is either curious or committed to doing the work necessary to start their healing journey. They may be someone who has learned a behavior to cope with trauma, like substance use or an eating disorder for example, and are discovering that tool is no longer serving them. Perhaps they notice the way they have been living is in alignment with someone else's values rather than their own. My goal as a therapist is to bring to their attention ideas and feedback that provides a new perspective that guides my clients to a more empowered way of life.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
