People consider therapy for a variety of reasons & I'm here to help through NWA Therapy's team. My experience working in a hospice setting has helped me learn so much to support and counsel someone as they journey through grief and loss. My work in dialysis has informed me on strategies to help patients manage the emotional stress of chronic illness & medical concerns. Work in a psychiatric hospital exposed me to patients struggling with significant mental health problems. I want to partner with you as we work together through the struggles of life including depression, grief, loss, anxiety, stress, trauma, and life transitions.

You are not the problem, the Problem is the problem. While stress, conflict and even sadness are to be expected on occasion, they are not meant to be the ruling elements in your life. Many people respond to current situations based on past experience; positive or not. If you’ve experienced trauma (emotional, physical, sexual and/or racial) or chronic illness it tends to affect how you react to stress. It may cause you to be paralyzed, unable to complete a simple task. Do you desire a future where the past no longer rules today? A future where you are free to make the best choice for you giving you a contented and hopeful life?

I have enjoyed working with a wide variety of clients including individuals who are dealing with lifelong chronic illness, maternal issues; including perinatal mood disorders, trauma or loss, parenting, and adults who are trying to figure out their path in life, coping with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, and relationship issues.
I strive to provide a warm, respectful, comfortable environment for you to explore your life and areas of discontent. I believe people can benefit from therapy at any stage in life, things come up and often we need a sounding board to gain insight into our future goals or past experiences. When something is off in our lives, it is difficult to figure out how to move forward to achieve balance. My goal is to help you feel supported and empowered to make significant changes in your life and improve overall well being.

My approach to counseling is holistic because of the relationships between our minds, emotions, physical bodies, and spirits. Stress and stress management involve all aspects of our being. New research shows the connection between chronic stress in childhood and chronic physical and emotional illness in adults, and mind-body approaches that can help with healing. I also specialize in working with LGBTQ clients and their families. I am challenged and inspired by the difficulties that LGBTQ people face as they embrace their identities. Always, I want to support my clients in becoming their best, most authentic selves.

My clients are some of the most resilient and amazing people I know. I love walking alongside them and feel so honored to get to do this work. I primarily work with people who have experienced trauma or neglect at some point in their lives. I love getting to help clients as they become more of themselves and learn to love themselves. Every person has what they need inside them already. We all just need help and safety on the journey to find our true selves.

Overwhelmed by life. Burnt out. A master of stuffing away emotions so that you can get through the day. You earned a gold star in making sure everyone else is happy, but don’t know how to protect your own happiness. Your internal voice has become your harshest critic. You need a break, but if you slow down for too long the memories and the inner critic become too overwhelming. So you keep moving and working and doing all the things just to keep the thoughts away.

Deciding to get counseling is a brave step. It takes courage to risk being vulnerable with a stranger, but seeking an ally to help when you feel stuck or overwhelmed is a sign of mental health. As a counselor, I seek to form a partnership of equals with clients. I have been on both sides of the counseling relationship, and I know how powerful it can be to connect in a validating and supportive environment. I love counseling in part because I often learn as much from my clients as I have from being a client myself.

What could your life look like six months from now if you took a step toward healing today? Often, the hardest part is just starting. Depression, anxiety, grief, shame, and a number of other treatable concerns can leave you in a hopeless place. Are friends/family at a loss of how to help you? Are you struggling with a recent change in your life? Do you feel alone? If you remember nothing else, I want you to remember that you are more capable than you believe, and even a speck of hope is still hope.

My ideal client is someone who is ready to make changes and see improvement in their life. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed, down, anxious, lonely, or struggling in a relationship? These are symptoms telling you something isn't right, and you may need help figuring out what to do differently in order to feel better. You have probably tried several things, before seeking counseling, that haven't gotten you the results you want. Issues are always multifaceted, and it can be very difficult to figure out on your own. I will work to equip and empower you to move forward in confidence.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
