Are life's struggles and difficulties interfering or holding you back from being the person you want to be. If so, join me in seeking perspective and solutions to the obstacles in your life. Throughout my pre-license training and post licensure practice I have worked along side individuals who experienced anxiety, depression, and/or relationship difficulties, as well as victims of sexual assault and intimate partner violence. I specialize in helping those who struggle with addiction and/or anger issues, which often have undertones of anxiety, depression, or trauma sustaining the problem.

I specialize in trauma and PTSD and have worked extensively with adult and adolescent survivors of childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, and relational trauma for 13 years.
Traumatic events overwhelm our capacity to cope and lead to profound changes in the brain and body. Trauma can lead to feelings of self blame, shame, and isolation. Due to a fear that the world is no longer safe, people develop ways of protecting themselves. These defenses, while once helpful, often negatively impact the way one functions in their job, school, and relationships. Thankfully, we all have within us a fundamental need to flourish and thrive.

Specific trauma includes PTSD, sexual assault, domestic violence.
We often forget that our first experience of the world is a shared one; that by nature we are relational beings. Which is why therapy can be so powerful. My job is to help you move away from the things that no longer work (perhaps never did), and toward a preferred way of being. Our process together is one of discovery & transformation, and honors both what you are and what you are becoming. You and I will collaborate to create an environment that is safe and supportive (I don't do that alone -- only you know what is safe). Through compassion & curiosity, our therapy will find new narratives and make meaning of old ones.

I also work with victims and perpetrators of emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years experience in the field. I work collaboratively with my clients to help them get back in balance, feel and act more like themselves, to feel empowered and better able to effectively manage their lives. I help people to feel more in control over their circumstances: their own thoughts and feelings, their relationships, and their responsibilities. My approach to therapy is client and family centered, warm, nonjudgmental, solution-focused, and strength-based.

Other areas of focus include parenting, aging, and past history of sexual abuse.
Are you living in a sexless relationship? Or perhaps the sex you're having is unsatisfying, or hampered by something specific. My office provides you with a safe, comfortable space to discuss your sexual life, answer your questions, all within the framework of a sex-positive atmosphere. I don't believe in pathologizing someone's sexual behaviors. As an AASECT-certified sex therapist, my philosophy is simple: if it's consensual, and it's not hurting you or your partner(s), your sexuality and all that it entails (your fantasies, experimentation, whatever turns you on) will be supported, nurtured, and listened to without judgment.

My background includes working with; sexual trauma, (co-founder of the Sexual Assault Center, Nashville, TN), performance and anxiety containment (athletes, professionals, Army soldiers and families, students therapists), unique populations (LGBTQ+, people escaping childhood religious cultures, and veterans), and adoption.
My style of therapy is client-centered. I want to know who the person is that has chosen to come to therapy to improve their life. Clients can describe the areas of their life that they want to improve, and as these are recorded, individual therapy goals are created. This process is possible because I am often described as a master listener. Once the goals for improvement have been established, a game plan is able to be created. My unique background includes anxiety containment, trauma resolution, and resilience creation. Each client has strengths to build from to create a more effective way of thinking about the issues.

I have done extensive work with victims of domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, depression, anxiety caregiving, (especially to those caring for others with dementia), marital issues and spiritual questions.
For the last 23 years I have been a Biblical Counselor and trainer in a local church in the Antelope Valley of Southern California. My cliental was largely Christian in their outlook and practice but I also valued and enjoyed my time spent with many people without a specific faith tradition. Spirituality is an important aspect of our identity, and I am qualified by education and experience to integrate Biblical values into the counseling relationship, but my practice has never been exclusively Christian. Depression, anxiety, grief, marital issues and life transitions effect all of us.

Also, I'm trained in Attachment Focused EMDR (EMDRIA Certified) and Trauma Resiliency Model which focuses on PTSD, long-term exposure to neglect, physical, and sexual abuse, and drug and alcohol dependency.
Most of us come into therapy seeking change. Maybe we hurt too much, feel lonely, depressed, anxious, or hate our job. Our relationship might be faltering or we're feeling overwhelmed by the family. What I've learned is that we come into therapy thinking that we have one story, or narrative, and that narrative is set and fixed. I believe we've forgotten that we have a multitude of stories, or alternative narratives. Those alternative narratives can be discovered and shed light on new options and possibilities, while expanding our understanding of what we once believed was unalterable.

I have experience in couples work, sexual abuse, physical abuse, developmental trauma, sex/love/porn addiction, depression, and anxiety.
Life has a way throwing curve balls. From unexpected challenges to fluctuating deadlines, life sometimes causes us to feel like we are aiming for a moving target. Relationships are guaranteed to have pitfalls that can surprise anyone. Trauma often is the leftover when a home or society is not welcoming, when violence has been perpetrated on you, or when you are faced with overwhelming loss. You will need access to your internal resources when addressing past and present trauma. Living life with a centered mindfulness can help guide you to wholeness.

Have you experienced sexual assault, violence or other trauma? Are you experiencing issues with your significant other or other relationships? Sometimes addiction, depression, anger, and anxiety can happen because of a trauma history. Treating trauma can help you get your emotional health back and free you from addictive behavior and pain.

I have over 15 years of experience working in private practice and residential treatment, treating individuals suffering from severe depression, overwhelming anxiety, and trauma from sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and physical abuse.
With so many different kinds of therapists and therapy styles, finding the right therapist can feel like a daunting task. I believe the most important factor in finding the right therapist is what we call the "fit" - how comfortable and understood you feel when sitting with a therapist. I offer an initial consultation to see what it would be like for us to work together. If you decide to keep looking, there is no charge for this session.

Many female patients present with a history of sexual abuse and I have considerable experience treating those and related abuse issues, e.
I have had success treating the middle aged female, 40-60, with relational, launching, re-entry and life change issues. I also integrate biofeedback of various types into the treatment program in order to either avoid or minimize medication interventions, when appropriate. I search diligently the patient's medical history and symptoms, and work with local medical providers, to rule out general medical conditons that may be driving psychological symptoms, e.g. hypothyroid and depression, or adrenal issues and anxiety or depression. Anxiety can be treated with biofeedback interventions and I provide in-office treatment and take home devices.

I believe it is natural for humans to want to change how they feel. Unfortunately, how we seek this change can determine the difference between healthy vs. unhealthy behavior. My work is guiding you through an in-depth exploration of how early experiences have shaped your sense of self and how you manage feelings. My goal is to help you develop both a compassionate view of these experiences and a more secure sense of self. In addition to Dual Diagnosis, I work with actors/artists/writers/entertainment professionals, gay men navigating mid-life, and adults who have experienced sexual abuse.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
