Making the decision to begin therapy requires courage. It can also be the first, of many, gifts to yourself resulting in personal growth and change. If you are waking with anxiety, dealing with feelings of emptiness, having difficulty in a relationship or struggling with alcohol, substance abuse or other addictions, therapy can offer the chance to incorporate useful, healthy and appropriate skills to start the journey towards your true, authentic self.

Starting therapy can be daunting, but you don’t have to go through it alone. My goal as a therapist is to foster a safe, non-judgmental space that allows you to gain insight into your presenting concerns and facilitates progress towards a healthy, meaningful life. Therapy is not one size fits all. I believe in an integrative collaborative counseling approach, pulling from a variety of evidence based research that tailors treatment to each individual’s preferences, values, and goals.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan with a double major in Psychology and Sociology and Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Wayne State University. I use a Person-Centered approach and pride myself on being down to earth and easy to talk to in what I refer to as my "judgment free zone". I understand how hard it can be to open up to a stranger with very personal issues. I believe I have a natural ability to make my clients feel comfortable and safe while supporting them to have the courage to share their story with me. I have over 15 years of counseling experience in a wide variety of areas.

Difficult life experiences can take away our sense of safety and make us feel detached from the world and others. Examples of these events include involvement with the foster care system, family separation, chronic illnesses, military deployments and readjustment, and sexual trauma/military sexual trauma. I have experience helping individuals and families process these traumatic events to assist them in reducing the negative effects the symptoms of trauma can have on survivors and the people that they love.

The time we live in today is increasingly stressful and complex for young people and families who are grappling with post-pandemic fears and health issues, in addition to complex family histories, relationships, identity issues, social media pressures and educational expectations. Many feel stuck, anxious and/or depressed, which comes out in their behavior. As the young person or their caregiver, you are understandably concerned. You want to learn why this is happening and how to make the hardship ‘go away’. Mental health is not just in the mind, but a function of the body, spirit, social influence and environment as well.

Seeking therapy is a big step. As a therapist, I strive to create a comfortable environment where you can freely discuss any topic without fear of judgement. The "why" behind each individual's decision to seek therapy may differ from person to person - but I will always strive to be open-minded, understanding, empathetic, and ensure that therapy is consistently a safe space for you. My main goal is to establish a space where you can feel safe to share personal thoughts, issues, and concerns so that we can work through them together.

Life is unexpected and full of unknowns. Familial, relational, and societal (among others) pressures are demanding and seem like they will never end. This is stressful and may cause you to feel depressed, overwhelmed, anxious, and negative about your past, present, and future. You may feel like you have nobody to turn to or to ask for help. Do you feel like you're carrying a burden, beating yourself up, or overthinking?

Personal growth, more satisfying relationships and a greater sense of peace and enjoyment are areas that CAN improve with effort and where therapy CAN help. Struggling with life's challenges sometimes requires a professional point of view and therapy CAN help. I bring an interactive approach to the therapeutic relationship where family members, significant others are always welcome. Having a comfortable place to explore these areas in our lives where we may need to learn and practice acceptance or make personal changes is most important . This is a primary goal and one that will lead to a brighter place.

I work with people dealing with emotional problems that may manifest as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and trauma. The encounters with emotions seem powerful, overwhelming and mysterious. They may feel so powerful, that you push away, stuff down, use substances, lash out or even allow the emotions to direct your actions and thoughts. It can feel confusing of how you can build strength to overcome emotional wounds. How do you make sense of what doesn't always make sense? Exploring your emotions with a therapist can be healing and encouraging.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
