We all suffer, there is nothing wrong with you. Counseling is a collaborative process that we, you and I, use to actively construct a way of living. Sometimes our conversations will reveal previously unseen solutions. Anything that I propose is yours to question, modify, elaborate, or reject. You are a unique person who knows what has worked and what has not worked in the past. Life is an ongoing practice, made more meaningful and less confusing when engaged in authentic dialogue with others. Maybe, through shared inquiry, we can discover new possibilities. I would be honored to visit with you and find our way together.

Navigating various relationships, life transitions, trauma, family issues, or a crisis in life can be extremely challenging. In overwhelming times, we often struggle to find the authentic support we seek on our journey. The choice to pursue healing and personal growth through therapy takes a tremendous amount of courage, and I greatly value and appreciate each interaction with my clients for this strength. It is my privilege to provide a safe, accepting and warm environment where we travel alongside each other in your unique experience.

It is my understanding that the relationship built in counseling is extremely valuable and creates space for change and relief in an individual’s life. Counseling is a space where one can be seen, heard, and valued without judgement as they explore their concerns and share vulnerability. Through working together, I hope to assist clients in working through feelings, experiences, and symptoms that might serve as blockages to participating fully in their lives.

Asking for help is one of the hardest things to do. It can make you feel defeated and vulnerable, however, it is the first step to overcome the obstacles in your life. After overcoming this step, the last thing you want to do is to tell a stranger your most inner thoughts. I will provide an environment that encourages trust, open communication, and understanding. I believe it is important to collaborate with my clients as each client is the expert of their own lives. It is my personal goal to empower and develop the skills my client needs to address any issues that are prohibiting them from living the life that they want to live.

Amy enjoys working with moms as they navigate the the journey of motherhood, starting before there’s a positive test all the way through transitioning to an empty nest. In the counseling space, she hopes that people are able to discover what it means to be their true self.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship offers a unique context for emotional understanding to occur. When we find ourselves in the presence of a non-judgmental, empathically attuned person, we can begin to feel safe enough to unfold and sort through our most complex experiences and painful emotions with the hope that they are rendered more tolerable and gradually integrated. My approach to therapy involves active listening and thoughtful engagement with the goal of deepening self-awareness and making meaning together.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
