Therapy is successful when you have a therapist who understands you AND knows how to help you. I work with men and women navigating relationships, anxiety/depression, major life transitions, and family conflicts, all while trying to integrate two very different cultures – the one we’re born into and the one we’re living in. As a South Asian woman and a therapist for over 7 years, I understand how culture plays a huge role in our unique challenges and expectations.

You’re trying to be a good parent. You’re navigating how to communicate effectively with your teen, help them understand their emotions, and equip them with tools to navigate adulthood. You see them battle with anxiety, peer pressure, social situations, and academic demands. They’ve become withdrawn, stressed, and are falling behind in school. Watching them struggle has been tough, especially because they no longer confide in you. You see their relationships declining, along with their mental health, and you feel helpless about how to make things better. You wish you knew what to do and want nothing more than to see them thrive.

Talk therapy can only take us so far. If you feel stuck and want to try something different, somatic therapy may provide another level of depth and help you break through patterns you’ve been stuck in. I am a Filipino-American Somatic Psychotherapist, Certified Hakomi Therapist, and Certified Brainspotting Therapist. I use mindfulness to help clients understand their current experience and how it impacts their current struggles and conflicts.

I am accepting both therapy and assessment patients. I work with children, adolescents, and adults using open-ended guidance and exploration so that change can come from a more deeply rooted place. I use this perspective to address issues of culture, family dynamics, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism, trauma, and life transitions. I work best with clients who are prepared to do longterm and deep work to heal emotional wounds and examine how that impacts their current relationships. Clients who graduate with me come away with changed relationships, rooted in a stronger understanding of themselves and their needs.

From the unexpected challenges to finding fulfillment when overcoming a trial, every person deserves to be the hero of their own story. From trauma to mood disorders to relational issues, each challenge is not an isolated event, but a story that is connected to our past, present, and future. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is passionate about helping people work through these challenges to come out even stronger, emotionally and mentally. I work with youth, adults, couples, and families to identify how this connection can lead to overcoming challenges and finding healing.

Clients that typically find it rewarding to work with me are people who find themselves tired of trying to "fit" themselves into small spaces that do not truly honor the complexity of who they are spiritually, culturally, or with their sexuality. They want to start living more fully and authentically, and want to free themselves of old relationships and limiting beliefs that keep them stuck in old cycles of habit, obligation, and resentment. They make small changes and build insight over time so they can live more fully, authentically, and intentionally as their embodied selves.

We all feel lost from time to time, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve been through my own therapy as a young adult when I was stuck in a bout of anxiety and panic attacks due to childhood trauma. Throughout my years of working with traumatized individuals, I learned first-hand about how childhood trauma can have a strong impact on adulthood. I can help you address unresolved trauma, in order for you to find passion, connection, and purpose in your life.

Is anxiety, depression, or trauma holding you back from being your true self? Do you feel stuck in managing difficult life transitions? Now, every little thing becomes super overwhelming. Those negative experiences reopen old wounds and cause new ones. You tried burying your pain hoping it would go away. You feel lonely and tormented. You feel exhausted, stressed, and angry all the time. You wonder how much more you can take. You are unsure of who or where to turn for help. In the midst of this painful journey, you do not have to go through it alone.

As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I believe that people's emotions and behaviors are influenced by their perceptions and interpretation of events. I work collaboratively with my clients in a proactive manner in order for them to learn effective strategies that they can use for the rest of their lives. I also believe that we are influenced by the cultural context in which we grow up. All relationships are, to some extent, are contextual and intercultural. People often face new challenges as they go through transitions in their lives. I bring my life experiences and professional knowledge to therapy.

Asian Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist would be respectful and considerate of different groups, with regard to race, sexual orientation, gender, and other factors that are important to an individual. These considerations can help a client feel understood as well as validated. While some people think highlighting race could promote stereotypes and bias, more understanding and knowledge about cultural differences is a positive for a healthy therapeutic alliance.

How can I recognize an effective Asian therapist?

You can discern a lot by asking how familiar the potential therapist is with different cultures, as well as asking how they might address issues related to identity, values, and beliefs. Also inquire about their education, as well as any particular training they may have completed, such as cultural sensitivity or diversity and inclusion programs.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

The therapist may not share a client’s exact background, but the therapist may have plenty of hands-on experience as well as the sensitivity needed for therapeutic progress. Their sensitivity to different populations will help the client feel accepted and comfortable in sharing their concerns and difficulties.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Asian clients?

A therapist with an Asian background may have experience within their community, as well as broader cultural sensitivity. Ask the potential therapist whether they've worked with individuals who share your background. If they have not worked with similar clients, they may well know someone who has such experience.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Asian therapists?

The directory of Asian therapists includes professionals who have shared their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profiles, and they may not appear in search results for this reason; also, when the number of therapists identified as Asian is limited, the directory will also show therapists with comprehensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
