I’m skilled at working with anxiety, trauma/PTSD/CPTSD, life transitions, grief and loss, and LGBTQIA+ issues.
It may be hard to believe, but our most troubling habits and patterns began as strategies that once helped us deal with challenging or even dangerous circumstances. The difficulties that feel burdensome to you now—rumination, self-defeating behaviors, problematic relationship dynamics, stubborn emotional cycles—actually helped you survive in the past. And because they helped you survive, it takes more than just understanding and willpower to unravel them—it takes deeper work that engages both the body and mind. I weave together multiple therapeutic modalities into an approach tailored to your needs, goals, and whole self.

With a blend of solution-focused therapy and Buddhist mindfulness teachings, I help my clients develop skills to relate more effectively with their anxieties and sense of self, navigate the complexities of dating or marriage, and engage with life’s most prevalent existential questions. I’m a firm believer in taking control of one’s circumstances through agency and self-compassion. What my clients learn: manage anxiety in a culture that promotes urgency, strategies for dealing with stress, self-awareness in ones dating patterns and how to work through them, and differentiating between intuition and fear.

It's not always easy to be a person. My job as a therapist is helping you figure out what works for you. I'm particularly good with clients who feel they don't fit the mold of societal expectations. I enjoy working with people who may be cautious about psychotherapy. My areas of expertise include relationship issues; depression and anxiety; chronic illness and disability; the impact of illness on couples and families.

The issues that I can help you with include: depression; anxiety; working through trauma; grief/loss; major life transitions; self-discovery; exploring/cultivating creativity; exploring cultural identities; creating satisfying relationships; and understanding and resolving conflicts in interracial relationships.
I believe that healing and growth are inherent functions of the psyche. Within the containment of a warm, compassionate and collaborative therapeutic relationship, I encourage and cultivate the emergence of these functions in my clients that can lead to positive change or even profound personal transformation. It is crucial to explore difficult feelings and thoughts in this process. In my experience, while these thoughts and feelings can lead to psychological symptoms when avoided and pushed into the unconscious, they hold great potential for change when experienced, confronted and reflected upon in a safe setting.

People see me for smoking cessation, weight management, sleep issues, optimum performance, phobias, preparation for surgery and anxiety.
The most important thing in working with me is your positive desire to change. Given that I'll bring you into the office, we will discuss your issues of concern and design and implement suggestions to create growth , understanding and lasting solutions. Many clients see me once for behavior change through hypnotherapy. Others see me for ongoing psychotherapy appointments. Some clients combine both modalities to insure continued growth and change. I am optimistic about the possibilities of health and healing through our work together. After forty years in practice I remain committed to my clients and their work with me

There are often understandable reasons why feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self-worth develop.
Often, much of the suffering a person experiences comes from difficulties in relationships; with others and with oneself. With compassion and understanding, I can help you explore what gets in the way of having satisfying relationships. As part of that process, we can look at ways to communicate more effectively. I have special interest and experience in working with people from different cultural backgrounds, of mixed cultural backgrounds, or in cross-cultural relationships. I have worked with many clients who are adult children of alcoholics, and understand the challenges of such an upbringing. I work with individual adults and couples.

I help adults, teens and couples with relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, work and school stress, and eating disorders.
I engage with my clients deeply, using my years of experience, expertise and intuition, to allow them to experience life more fully. Many people cover over feelings of fear and sadness to protect themselves from hurt. I strive to create a safe environment where trust can be developed, and people can gradually rely less on their need to protect themselves through self-destructive patterns, and more on their healthy, life-enhancing strengths. I help my clients to feel more connected with themselves and to have richer, more meaningful relationships with the people in their lives.

I'm a general psychologist, and I provide individual, couples, and group psychotherapy to a wide variety of clients. I have an extensive background in working with anxiety disorders and stress reduction. I can also bring a number of techniques to bear in helping you overcome depression. Because of my background in business (Wharton MBA), I work particularly well with successful professionals who are seeking greater meaning and fulfillment in their careers and personal lives. My style balances patience and deep inquiry with energetic engagement. For people in recovery, my approach is a good complement to 12-step work.

As a mindfulness and somatic based therapist, my approach is to provide a safe and supportive environment for your therapy process. I have an approach to therapy that includes both self-discovery with educational resources. I believe in supporting the internal process of the client unfolding it at their own pace. We can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your current life. By applying mindfulness techniques with somatic therapy approaches and techniques, we will examine long-standing behavior patterns or negative beliefs that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

My goal is to create a safe, supportive and honest environment where we can explore and address your concerns. It is through open and honest communication that we can foster trust and understanding. I help my clients to define their goals and achieve them through the following process: addressing the challenges, developing coping strategies and giving tools while learning to recognize and appreciate their successes. I do not believe one size fits all but work to acknowledge and see what you need. I work from a mind body approach to understand that how we think affects how we feel and how we perceive the world and our lives.

As a child and adult therapist I am fortunate to witness the entire developmental span. With this unique window into the lifespan, I help children, parents, adults and couples gain insight into the patterns being created and already created in the mind of how they relate to and with the world i.e.how they relate to themselves and others. By first developing a safe and respectful relationship with my patients, we can begin to understand and uncover these complicated yet reflexive patterns that at some point served them, by protecting their self integrity, but along the way began to cause more harm then good.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
