There will be times in your life where you will struggle to make a decision about your job, or a relationship, or you may experience overwhelming anxiety or become depressed because you just feel stuck. You may have experienced a traumatic event when you were younger that continues to get in the way of fully enjoying your life. You may have received difficult news about your health or recently lost a friend or family member and your capacity to enjoy life is diminished.

When people face personal problems or internal conflict, they benefit from taking time to talk with an experienced psychologist. It is an opportunity to talk confidentially with someone, outside of your family and friends, who is trained in mental health diagnostics and problem solving. Usually self esteem regulation, anger, anxiety, unhappiness, family conflict or maladaptive coping with substance misuse bring people for help. The purpose of counseling is to resolve conflict and go forward facing life's challenges with more strength and maturity.

Deciding to come to therapy can be a difficult decision; one that takes courage and often comes with some anxiety and ambiguity about what the process will entail. It is my belief that the foundation for a positive experience in therapy begins with the therapeutic relationship. Establishing a base of trust and rapport from which to grow as we work towards your goals will be the initial focus of treatment. It is important for you to feel comfortable with me; I will do my best to facilitate that process and to be transparent about what you can expect from therapy.

I particularly enjoy assisting clients in addressing relationship and self-worth issues, healing from trauma, and coping with depression and anxiety.
I view therapy as an interactive process leading to the possibility of starting a journey that can guide you through your difficulties, enrich your understanding of yourself, and overcome the things that no longer serve you to cultivate a more grounded and fulfilling life. Centered in honesty and compassion, I will work with you to gain a deeper understanding of working through internal and current difficulties, help nurture your capacity for change, and acquire practical skills to shift the patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior that inhibits your growth and a more positive engagement in life and relationships.

Whatever you are experiencing, be that anxiety, depression, trauma, a sense of isolation, social/familial rejection, or estrangement, it's my goal to help you feel more secure: connected to yourself and others. I wholeheartedly believe in providing a supportive therapeutic environment that allows my clients to safely explore and integrate the many unique and essential parts of themselves.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
