I am a Child and Family Therapist who works with children of all ages and their families. My goal is to help your family connect through compassion, creating new coping tools, and become more resilient. I support children in building a deeper awareness of what happens inside, recognizing their hot buttons, and becoming empowered to use new, more constructive coping tools for stressful and difficult moments in life. I provide support for parents jointly with individual treatment for children. Through parent and family sessions, I identify helpful strategies to support child and family growth at home.

Whether you are dealing with issues of grief and loss, divorce/separation, infertility, anxiety, depression, anger management, parenting, self-esteem, adoption, crisis management or anything that keeps you stuck and gets in the way of your progress, I provide a safe, judgement free zone to help you take charge of your life on your terms.
Feeling overwhelmed with life, and don't know where to begin? In today's demanding world, you find yourself with so many things that you are juggling in order to create a healthy balance in your life. No matter how much you put your best foot forward, there is always something that gets in the way, causing you to doubt your progress. You try to push through each day with a smile on your face, but internally you are falling apart. You are living in survival mode and feeling like you are barely making it. Life has a way of making us feel broken down, conflicted and frustrated. I can reassure you that it does not have to be this way.

You need someone to help your family reconnect amidst the unique challenges of adoption, foster care or traumatic experiences.
You lie awake at night, going over the day again and wondering where it all went wrong. Before you have time to figure it out, yet another hectic day has begun. As a parent of a child who has experienced a challenge or traumatic experience, it's like you're being asked to do it all. The problem is that there's never enough energy, time, or information to manage the difficult behaviors. Before you know it, you've seen multiple therapists and nothing seems to work. The parenting suggestions just don't fit the socially awkward tantrums, fits of rage, or your child's need to control. You're nearing the end of your rope, but what's next?

(Note: Formerly Wolf-Stanton Psychotherapy) We all experience some sort of pain, stress, trauma, or adversity in our personal lives and relationships. When our hearts ache, we search for ways to cope. These initial ways of coping often are adaptive in the short term. However, in the longer term, these same coping strategies may hinder further growth and healing. You and I can work together without judgment to dismantle painful experiences and cultivate a strong, empowered, and healthy core sense of self. You can realize your full potential and mobilize into healthy and constructive patterns of thought, behavior, and emotion.

How do we move from merely surviving each day to thriving for the long term? While it is true that most of us are products of our environment, histories, and current circumstances, we need not be forever defined or limited by them. Transforming relationships with family, friends, community, society, and most importantly, ourselves, can help us navigate there. If daily life seems overwhelming, unfulfilling, hopeless, or restrictive, my practice can help you clarify your values and needs, expand your coping skillset, create or deepen your connections, and build a meaningful future for your corner of the world.

I have enjoyed providing psychotherapy and pastoral counseling services for over 30 years. There is nothing more gratifying than helping a person move through dark and difficult situations, leading them to a place where life works again. There is hope! I have a rich educational background in both psychotherapy and pastoral counseling. I received my graduate degrees from the State University of New York at Albany and Yale University. I've discovered that a healthy psychological self and a healthy spiritual self are based upon the same principles, showing kindness, compassion, warmth, and deep understanding to oneself and others.

Therapy is a journey where you learn more about yourself, your internal experience, and your loved ones in order to change your life based on your own goals and values. I can help you and/or other members of your family gain flexibility in your thoughts and actions through experiential skill development. At times, therapy can involve vulnerability and emotional expression; while at other times, it can be playful and enlightening. My goal is to create a warm and safe environment where emotions, thoughts, memories, and other internal experiences can be explored with compassion and understanding.

Brene Brown says, "Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, & change." The courage to engage in therapy is an adventure of self-exploration and self-understanding. It is seemingly risky to step out of your comfort zone, but the rewards of compassion and healing spur new ideas, new ways of being, and a greater sense of who you are. This process shapes a more authentic self that gives meaning to life experiences, and present ideals. Abraham Maslow says, "in any given moment we have 2 options: step forward into growth, or step back into safety." The risk is well worth it!

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
