I have over ten years of experience working with adolescents and adults struggling with Depression and Anxiety, Addiction, Adoption and Attachment, Trauma, Shame and Vulnerability.
I specialize in helping adolescents and adults in finding their own inner purpose, strength, and wisdom. Often, this requires peeling back the layers of old habits, wounds, and ways of being in the world that are resulting in distress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of dissatisfaction. By helping to heal the old wounds, there is more space to experience joy and contentment while also discovering what matters the most to you. One on one sessions can take a variety of forms including more traditional talk therapy; using different art mediums; or getting out of the office for a walk.

Are you struggling with sadness? Unhappy in your current life situation? Do you feel stuck? The daily stresses of life can build until we feel completely overwhelmed with life. Sometimes we feel lost, alone, or depressed; we may even feel confused and hopeless about the future. These feelings are very ‘normal,’ yet most of us feel as if we're falling apart. Whether your journey involves healing from childhood wounds, achieving greater self-awareness and self-esteem, or improving relationships, let me help facilitate change using your inner resources, while we work collaboratively in a safe and supportive environment.

Montanans face unique challenges related to geography, a culture of individualism, intergenerational patterns of trauma, and a changing economy. I’ve spent my career developing evidence-based skills to meet the needs of my neighbors. This starts with building a straightforward relationship as a foundation for work that attends to the needs of our physiology, psychology, spirituality, and our community. Therapy is about cultivating ongoing processes of resilience that continue outside of the office and everyday I do my best to work myself out of a job.

Let me support you individually (your child/ teen), with your partner(s), or as a family as you heal and grow. Life presents us with ongoing challenges; relationships, careers, families, raising children, medical issues, trauma, grief. These can add up to emotional stressors with behavioral reactions making it difficult to function as people in our various relationships and settings. When we become unaware of our emotional state and ignore self-care, emotionally, physically, spiritually, we may become stuck and are unable to function at a level that is our best selves. I will meet you, your child, or your family where you're at.

I work with adults, couples and teenagers. My approach is a blend of Family Systems Theory, cognitive behavioral therapy and positive psychology. I believe the quality of our lives is mostly determined by the quality of our relationships, so my work often involved teaching communication skills, resolving conflict and applying the new but vast amount of scientific research about relationships to your own lives. We can't control the events in our lives or our feelings, but we can control our behavior and thoughts. Counseling is learning to do just that. It's educational, inspiring and helpful in so many ways!

We have all been through so much these last several years, how can we possibly be expected to navigate all of this on our own? I have first-hand experience in the various ways that life can present challenges. And I also know you are doing so many things right. You are here looking for support. This an act of courage and defiance. I feel you refusing to feel this way, refusing to sacrifice yourself and come up empty handed. You are saying "No more". You are leaning toward your own worth willing to commit to yourself. And I want you to know that you don't have to heal alone.

Now accepting new clients! For over three decades I have worked with people of all ages and from many diverse backgrounds. Overall, I am passionate about all the people I serve! My primary focus is working with at risk children ages 5 - 18 who have faced a variety of challenges. Children often struggle with emotions; identifying, expressing and processing their feelings can be very difficult. Anger can rear its ugly head when underneath it may really be a whole bunch of other emotions going on. Some children need to express themselves other than verbally. Play and art therapy techniques, sand tray, and therapeutic games can be used as ways for kids to process emotions without talking or feeling pressured. Children often just need to be heard, given skills, and provided with opportunity for little successes that can increase their self-esteem. Parents are invited to learn valuable tools as well.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
