I believe that psychotherapy lays the emotional groundwork that leads to a more satisfying and engaged life. Many people mistakenly think of psychotherapy as one-sided: the person in therapy talks and the therapist listens. But effective psychotherapy - therapy that heals - works because of the unique relationship that develops between the therapist and the person in therapy. I provide an environment - safe and non-judgemental - that facilitates opening up in new and often unexpected ways and helps you experience and express deepest thoughts and feelings. I have particular experience working with gay men, HIV issues, substance abuse and sexual addiction.

Sometimes life can feel so overwhelming that it seems the only thing we can do is numb out, shut down, give into addiction, dissociation, or other forms of self-injury. One way out of this is to build our capacity to tolerate feeling. Navigating these stormy seas within ourselves can feel impossible to do on ones own. We're not meant to do this alone. Your unique experiences deserve to fall upon the ears of an empathetic and attuned listener who can help you find your bearings and learn to rework the damage that has been endured in order to heal wounds and grow new psychic skin. We can learn to survive what has seemed unsurvivable.

If you’re ready to take the steps to heal from anxiety, addiction(s) or work through a major life transition and don’t want to do it alone, I can help you.
Do you suffer from runaway anxiety and stress? Perhaps you feel too "on edge" or irritable and physically tense? If so, you also probably don't sleep well at night. Maybe in order to function, you've also developed an unhelpful relationship with alcohol, weed, or another substance and would like to learn either to abstain or to enjoy your drug(s) of choice in a measured and less harmful manner? Maybe you're struggling with a major life transition, such as starting a new career, a serious medical diagnosis, a divorce or the death of a loved one? Life can be wildly unfair, and sometimes the piling on of stressors can be overwhelming.

LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE! A phrase we often hear but seldom get to experience fully. And why? Because oftentimes people are going through life SURVIVING instead of truly LIVING. We make choices out of fear instead of love. When we are in SURVIVAL mode, we think only to stabilize ourselves in the moment. We may feel anxious, depressed, angry, or burnout. We may struggle with isolation, substance misuse, relationships, or risky behavior. In LIVING mode we are able to regulate our emotions appropriately, communicate effectively with others, maintain boundaries, practice self care, feel safe in our own body and THRIVE.

I have over 18 years experience working in NY outpatient substance abuse and mental health clinics with individuals, groups and families.
Therapy is a wonderful experience being with someone who can hold space for you, guide you and support your grow. There are many life areas where therapy could be helpful. In my practice, we work collaboratively to create a safe non-judgmental space, learn how to slow down, listen to your body, listen to ourselves, develop new insight on our problems, create fresh language which can describe our process, learn coping skills, access inner wisdom. We develop a therapeutic relationship which will support our process with gaining clarity, relief, balance, inner peace, hope and reconnecting with all parts of us which are suffering.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
