Les Wielstein, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I believe that each person is entitled to live to their fullest potential and believe in a partnership to enable that. I utilize a Cognitive-Behavioral framework in therapy which is infused with Humanistic, Eastern, and Existential metaphors and stories to provide a caring, direct, and thoughtful approach. I am also Trauma-Informed and understand that by using both written and verbal activities I provide a pathway to a sensitive and meaningful understanding of this lived experience.

"Truly, it is in darkness that one finds the light, so when we are in sorrow, then this light is nearest of all to us." - Meister Echkart. I am an integral psychotherapist who specializes in working with adult individuals and couples. My approach is person-centered, and I believe that clients benefit most from the truth that they, themselves, discover. My training is grounded in transpersonal psychotherapy, which is informed by depth psychology, existential/humanistic perspectives, and perennial philosophy.

My approach integrates the empathetic and existential roots of humanistic therapy, relational work grounded in attachment, present-focused mindfulness tools, and somatic awareness of sensations and feelings within the body.
I create an experience tailored to your individualized needs and goals. Instead of sticking to a template, we’ll identify how to ensure you feel most comfortable expressing yourself. Therapy can deepen your awareness—which could mean welcoming back parts that you feel disconnected from, discovering new thoughts or ideas, or working with feelings that don’t seem to fit easily in your day-to-day life. As a result, you’ll start to better understand the unique factors that influence your relationships and behaviors: your strengths, values, intuition, and emotions. With new perspectives, you can prepare to live with greater authenticity.

Starting therapy and finding the right fit can be a daunting task. I view the therapeutic relationship as something that is co-created over time and as the primary tool for healing. I have experience working with ages 3-50+ providing specific insights and tools relevant for the progressive stages of life and the many difficulties that can come up along the way. Focusing on the here and now, we work to increase self awareness, compassion, insight and care while simultaneously holding the larger context within which we meet, including ways that race, gender, class and culture impact our experiences and identities.

We all experience life's challenges, feel alone, stuck and unsure what to do sometimes. Therapy can be deeply healing, when we can open up and take the first step towards mental well-being and self-love. If this is you, you're in the right place.

Hello! My name is Annu, and I am a therapist in San Francisco (and online). I work with immigrants and adult-children of immigrants....also known as Third Culture Kids (TCK) or First Generation Americans. I work with multi-cultural and multi-racial couples, many of whom are people of color. I work with successful, career-driven achievers. I belong to each of these demographics - my parents immigrated to the US in 1971, and I worked in the corporate world for nearly 2 decades, climbing the corporate ladder rapidly before pivoting my career by going back to school to study counseling psychology. I work virtually via Zoom or phone.

I am a strength-based Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist—one who believes we each have the inner resources we need to be successful and happy in our lives. During our life journeys, many of us may need assistance with finding and/or highlighting our inner strengths so we can breakthrough our struggles, whether they be past traumas, family patterns/dynamics, relationship/attachment issues or a simple and current need for change. My hope is to help my clients build on their strengths, pinpoint their patterns, rewrite their stories, and find their way back to the positive aspects of life they deserve to experience.

Sometimes our life experiences lead us astray from our true nature which may cause unwanted struggles and allow false beliefs to dictate how we show up in the world. If you are experiencing difficulties in your life or problems with your relationships and want to create a healthier life that brings you peace, joy, purpose, and fulfillment, I welcome the opportunity to support you. I have great admiration for those who choose transformation. I know the strength, courage, and vulnerability it takes to live and express as your authentic self. It is not easy, but with the proper support and guidance, positive growth is possible.

I specialize in therapy for Autistic adults. Whether you’ve known you were Autistic your whole life, are newly diagnosed, or self-diagnosed, I can meet you where you’re at in this journey. I believe it is the journey of a lifetime to learn to live in your own body and care for yourself well. I want to help you meet your goals with compassion and the most up-to-date science. We now know that autism doesn’t look the way our culture often expects it to, and we see the harms of treatment models that aim to make you fit in with the neurotypical world. It’s hard living in a world that was not created for you or by you.

#1 You are courageous. It is not easy to ask for help or be willing to look at coping strategies or attachment styles that are no longer serving you. I strive to provide an open unbiased environment to develop a comfortable therapist/client dynamic in order to begin processing past or current issues with a focus on goal setting and starting where you're at. Change happens when you believe it can happen and the only failure is in not trying. I strongly believe that there is no destination, only the journey and in focusing on the process and being mindful, you can achieve anything.

Most of my clients come to me because they feel “stuck” in their lives. They may feel stuck in unfulfilling patterns, a trauma cycle, a sense of purposelessness, grief, depression or anxiety. They may be caught in an oppressive societal perspective of what it means to be “healthy.” In most cases, these symptoms are not enemies, but indicators that something new – a new perspective, a new story – is attempting to emerge, like a sapling pushing its way from beneath the ground.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
