Through a psychodynamic lens, I focus on underlying (often out of awareness) emotional and relational patterns that emerge in therapy.
I tend to view people as complex, and that our difficulties are intertwined with our relationships, culture, and lifestyle, past and present. I have advanced training in psychoanalysis and mentalization based treatment, working with adults coping with complex trauma and personality disorder diagnoses. Additionally, I work with athletes and professionals having problems with performance, doubt, and creativity. Ultimately, my efforts are aimed at cultivating a meaningful, trustworthy, and collaborative relationship meant to help individuals reflect on and understand where they have been, where they are, and where they want to go.

I have 20 years of experience studying and using a contemporary relational psychodynamic approach to treatment.
I am a licensed psychologist. My work is based on the contemporary research in the areas of development, attachment, neuropsychology, and psychoanalysis. This research indicates that a therapeutic relationship can help rework a person's internal emotional world and cognitive capabilities. The growth in therapy allows individuals to engage in more genuine and intimate relationships with others and to see themselves differently. It helps them be more effective in school and at work. I use a compassionate, practical, relational, and researched approach to help clients achieve meaningful lasting change.

In addition, I have worked with couples who have experienced relational conflicts, extramarital affairs, and sexual difficulties.
My therapeutic approach mainly focuses on helping my clients identify their strengths to help alleviate anxiety, depression, and trauma. I am a firm believer that our childhood experiences contribute to our beliefs, behavioral patterns, and selecting a romantic partner. Therapy is a process! To allow ourselves to be intimate and vulnerable with someone about our experiences and trauma can be daunting. As a therapist, it is my goal to help validate, create a safe environment and help understand aspects of lived experiences.

From my relational psychodynamic approach, I will not offer simple solutions to your complex problems but instead will join with you to peek below the surface toward the root of the issue and the potential for lasting knowledge and growth.
Needing the help of another person is one of the most complicated challenges we face as human beings. It can make us feel we are broken, that we are too little or too much, and that it would all be best kept inside rather than talked about in the open. Good help, however, can transform shame into acceptance, stuckness into movement, and self-distortion into alignment with our true selves. I specialize in and have extensive training and research experience in treating trauma disorders, PTSD, dissociative disorders, and complex PTSD. I also have specialties in and enjoy working with interracial relationships and men's issues.

Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

I typically integrate various evidence-based therapeutic approaches, such as trauma-informed, cognitive-behavioral, emotion-focused, mindfulness, values and strengths-based, relational, and self-compassion.
It takes an incredible amount of courage to admit our own insecurities and difficulties. To seek help through therapy requires even more determination and strength. Therefore, I strive to create a safe and non-judgmental environment and work together collaboratively to achieve your mental health goals.

Is therapy actually helpful? Can someone I don't know actually help me? Whether you’re looking to work through relational conflicts with a partner or family member or hoping to explore painful memories that have been affecting you all these years later, you’re probably wondering if you could feel safe diving deeper with a stranger. My hope is that on our journey together, you would find therapy to be a space where you can bring all of yourself without fear of being criticized or judged. I am committed to staying curious about your inner world and providing a level of care that is uniquely attuned and tailored to your story.

I believe that we cannot function well when our psychological, relational or physical well-being are compromised.
I have been very effective in helping people find relief from anxiety, depression, and trauma, as well as improving the quality of their life and relationships. I provide a thorough assessment followed by a collaboratively developed treatment plan to effectively address your individual situation. My Goal is to treat you as a whole person - biological, psychological, relational and spiritual. Often talk therapy alone will not be as effective as it could be when combined with appropriate adjunctive treatment(s) and I will refer you to the appropriate specialist(s) or resources when needed.

I am specifically trained in using Voice Dialogue, EMDR, meditation, dream work, and The NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM).
Is it a gnawing sense of anxiety, and loneliness that gets in your way? Often, I meet people who are up against strong self-criticism, doubt, low self esteem and transitions in life as they attempt to make it through the day. In my experience people come to therapy looking for something they can’t get elsewhere. You are not alone. Together we can resolve these struggles opening-up to new potential and life purpose.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
