Have you ever felt ashamed? Ever felt like others don’t understand you, but say they do? Those have been my own experiences and have led me to work with people in recovery and their families, survivors of domestic violence/abuse, minority communities and teens. I come from a multi-cultural family with an immigrant parent which has both enriched my life and created unique struggles for me. These experiences, however, have helped me empathize with a wide variety of people and situations. My goals are to support my clients as they navigate their struggles and find hope and strength within themselves.

I have learned through my experience that life is full of obstacles. For most of us, admitting that we might need support can be difficult and frightening, but I truly believe that talking about what is going on in our lives, learning to own our own story, and digging down deep and unearthing our fears is the most courageous thing that we can do. I offer a safe, non-judgmental environment with someone who will listen and honor your experience and who believes in your ability to choose your own life path.

I work with people struggling with a host of issues. Many of my clients over the years have had anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, and addiction issues. Since I've been doing therapy since 2008, I have worked with more presenting problems than I can list. I enjoy working collaboratively with people to find a resolution to the problems that bring them to therapy. People often don't know what to look for in a therapist. The research is very consistent here. It says a strong therapeutic alliance is more likely to bring about the change that you are seeking than anything else. My clients find that when working with me.

How often do you get curious about the difficulties you face? Have you ever sought support, understanding, or another perspective from someone you feel safe with or trust? The beauty of the therapeutic relationship is that it is a secure space to explore this curiosity about your feelings and whatever you are facing in life.

Navigating through challenging life experiences and transitions can disrupt our well-being, strain our connections with others, and even divert us from our aspirations. Therapy serves as a valuable tool to guide us back into balance and help us become our optimal selves. Employing a flexible, client-centered approach, I address a spectrum of issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, domestic violence, grief, coming out, divorce, empty nest, leaving a religious community, and challenges associated with aging.

Hi! I’m Marki and I want to be your new therapist! I’m kind, compassionate, and sassy. If that sounds like your kind of therapist then read on my friend. I’ve found that everyone wants to belong to something. Many of us spend years searching for what that is without realizing it already exists. I’m passionate about helping people find where they belong and how to use that to fulfill their purpose in life. I love helping others to be vulnerable and working through shame (it sucks, but you gotta do it). I believe it’s vital to implement self compassion in your life as well as introducing productive change that YOU are in charge of.

One of my personal mottos is “I am still learning” and I use the same perspective with clients as we work to address your needs in therapy together. Through the therapeutic process, I hope to empower you with greater understanding and compassion for yourself and for what you are learning from your experiences and choices. I am an advocate for educating the general public about mental health. I believe in the power of an individual to make personal and global change. I love helping individuals gain greater insight into thought, feeling and behavior patterns that you feel are no longer serving your best interests.

Most of us have the ability and desire to change, but we need help discovering exactly how. Despite our best efforts, we often feel frustrated and in pain from the impact of experiences we don’t fully understand. I use a dynamic yet evidence-based approach to mental healthcare focused on identifying and realigning a person’s beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors. Retain what makes you significant, and support yourself with a more accurate sense of perception and the accompanying skills required to implement. I’m genuinely grateful to be doing my dream job. I have a deep affection for people and would be honored to work with you.

Tired, Sad, Hurting, Unheard, and Overwhelmed. These are just a few words that many people are feeling at this exact moment. The pain of any one of these words alone can be demoralizing by itself. As a person who has overcome my own mental health issues, I feel I bring an unmatched level of compassion, grace, and guanine care into every session. Let's work together to find you the peace, healing, and connection you unconditionally deserve. By no means will it be easy but as the saying goes "nothing worth doing is easy" and the time has come to recognize that you are worth the effort.

I’ve worked as a social worker with individuals and families in Utah for many years, and I feel honored to have been invited into people’s stories to be a participant in their healing and growth. As we live our lives, we’re presented with unexpected situations that can be overwhelming. Difficulties come from conditions in our bodies, sometimes from our relationships, and sometimes from our life circumstances. My clinical training and professional experience, and my own life challenges have taught me to enjoy each individual as a uniquely incredible human with boundless potential to overcome adversity and thrive.

I have experience working with young children, pre-teens, teens, young adults, couples, parents, and adults. Each phase of life has its own nuances, and I love to walk alongside my clients as they navigate the difficult and unexpected circumstances that can occur. As a parent myself, I am particularly passionate about empowering parents, addressing child-parent attachment, and treating child behavioral concerns. I have also been trained in EMDR and have experience working with both complex trauma and single incident traumas.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
