I graduated in 2000 with a master’s degree in social work. I am a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) therapist in Alabama, Colorado, and DC working with individuals at different stages of life. My experience includes working with couples, individuals, and families while understanding the importance of working with multidisciplinary team members to assess and address areas of need.

I have been a therapist since 1996, I founded Shining Through Counseling because I think everyone has a story to tell and needs support on their journey to wellness. Everyone's path looks different, and that is what makes us unique. Walking that path can be scary and hard. I am here to support and you and help you to heal, meet your goals and let your true self shine through. I do this by building a trusting relationship, and working together to address current and past issues or trauma, processing through them, building and strengthening coping skills and supports. Hi there! My name is Sam. I am a trained person-centered therapist with 4 years of clinical experience working with clients of all ages. In my practice I use modalities and techniques including child-centered play therapy for children, along with talk therapy and expressive arts therapies for adolescents and adults. Depending on your needs, we may work on things like mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, communication techniques, as well as crisis and trauma healing. I have a wide range of experience working with various client concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, and life transitions.

I am accepting new patients! Animal Assisted Therapy is a goal-directed intervention in which an animal is an integral part of the treatment process. AAT is directed, delivered and documented by a licensed health/human service professional with a specific clinical goal for a particular individual in mind. An animal assisted therapist operates from a theoretical foundation and facilitates change in a client through the clients interactions with an animal. Animal Assisted Interventions operates from a cognitive behavioral approach utilizing canines to effectively assist in a clients journey through the stages of change.

My goals in therapy are to collaborate with my clients to help them reach their full potential and to improve their quality world. I look at my clients holistically and do not define them by the symptoms that led them to therapy. I am a Certified Sex Therapist recognized through AASECT, and work with clients on topics related to sexual identity/orientation, relationship structures, sexual dysfunctions, and kink/BDSM. I also work with clients addressing concerns including depression, anxiety, life transitions, and older adulthood/lifestyle changes.

Over years of experience, I have discovered that people develop a way of thinking about themselves, others, the world. How we think determines how we experience life. This way of thinking includes negative beliefs that we develop about ourselves. There's really only a handful and they sound something like "I don't matter" or "I'm worthless," "It's never good enough" or maybe "something is wrong with me." These beliefs keep us stuck because they are not just in our heads. They are connected with emotional experiences, often very painful. So even though we know we're worthy, we don't feel worthy.
