Common theoretical approaches I may frequently use can include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Strength Based Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
Hi there, I'm Roman Coronado, are you feeling somewhat stuck in life? Thinking you are too hard on yourself, but also feeling tired of being burdened by the weight of feeling unhappy, unmotivated, or just excessively worrying. Are you struggling with your health, work, or relationship? I help individuals work through these challenges and help manage them whether it's anxiety, depression, or something else. I can understand that seeking therapy can seem scary, overwhelming, or even questionable, but you are making the right choice.

Therapeutic techniques such as CBT, motivational interviewing, and correction of cognitive distortions will be incorporated into sessions to address concerns covering all aspects of the human experience including stress and anxiety, anger management, grief and loss, trauma, and depression.
I believe therapy is broad and ever changing, shaping to fit your needs as you move through life’s ups and downs. Some people utilize therapy to address an acute problem, while others see it more as a tool for maintenance, same as we view exercise. Regardless of the circumstances, I know therapy has a positive role to play for all. Whatever the road that brought you here, and your lived experiences that have uniquely crafted you, this is a place for you to find growth and relief. Together we will create a safe space for you to unburden your mind and explore yourself more deeply.

With expertise in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), CBT, and Motivational Interviewing, I assist clients in developing skills to manage emotions, navigate interpersonal conflicts, cultivate mindfulness, and challenge negative thought patterns.
I specialize in working with individuals and couples from a holistic perspective, incorporating evidence-based modalities to support healing and growth. My practice is informed by the belief that healing occurs within the context of relationships. I approach therapy from a "person in the environment perspective". I help clients explore the dynamics within their families of origin and how these patterns continue to influence their current relationships and sense of self. We will also explore the importance of secure attachments in fostering emotional regulation and resilience.

New couples are often reluctant to seek help. Be it stigma surrounding couple's therapy, or feeling like they have not been together "long enough," couples usually wait until resentment and unhappiness have grown to distressing levels before reaching out for help. According to relationship expert Dr. John Gottman, couples often endure an average of six years of unhappiness before seeking help. Why let years of resentment build up when you can spend that time strengthening your bond and finding new ways to overcome and adapt to life's inevitable conflicts?

Our resilient spirit helps us get through many difficulties and obstacles throughout our lives, but sometimes we come across something that can threaten to hurt us, hold us back or even keep us stuck. Engaging in the therapeutic process can help alleviate these feelings of overwhelmedness, hopelessness or fear.

Whether you’ve come to this place because life circumstances have shifted, the day-to-day feels too strenuous to manage, or you’re hurting in some way, we all have unique strengths that can help us navigate these challenges. Therapy is one way to foster those strengths, and when we are given a warm and trusting therapeutic space, we can often find harmony and solutions to our struggles. I focus on helping individuals with anxiety, depression, stress, shame, grief, life transitions, or relationship struggles.

I strive to be an effective and warm ally for adult and adolescent clients. By way of creating a therapeutic relationship rooted in compassion, housed within a healing environment, I believe it is possible to find meaningful changes in one's life. I work primarily from a systems-informed approach and utilize this framework to help understand behaviors not in isolation but as part of a system of factors where solutions require a deepening understanding of those factors.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
