My ideal clients are those with a spiritual perspective who have done a lot of inner exploration and are ready to get to the bottom of their issues. They know they have an important God-given mission to fulfill and need help in fulfilling this mission. (We all do!) They want to be of service to humanity and all of life but feel some internal resistance, which is holding them back. They desire to mature to psychological adulthood and are willing to exert the time and effort to arrive at this worthy goal. Those with chronic illness who are eager to know what their souls are communicating through each symptom also make ideal clients.

I offer individual, family/couples/ group counseling for anxiety, depression, PTSD, anger/stress management, relationships, chronic illness/pain, parenting, life transitions/stress.
At some point in our lives we might feel overwhelmed, stuck, as if the life has placed a roadblock on our way. Other times we created our own roadblocks. We are always busy, always running, often take care of others, do what others want us to do, and neglect our own fundamental needs of happiness, belonging, fulfillment, and joy. It is so important to stop for a moment and to create your own safe space for internal search and reflection that would lead to finding YOUR OWN answers and solutions. As a therapist, I offer such space for you.

Tired – of behaviors you can’t change, of relationships that drain you, of pretending to be okay when you're not, of pain that never seems to end, of responsibilities that are overwhelming, of feeling so alone, of life. In a world that is accustomed to quick fixes, filters, and a façade of “having it all together,” it is my greatest joy to provide a window of space where you can freely breathe and fall apart. It is my primary goal to cultivate an environment where you can find meaning in this messy life that so often feels senseless and out of our control.

As an existential behavioral health psychologist, who predominantly works in cancer care and with those facing existential-spiritual (life-transitional) crises, the client most attracted to my services would be someone who is interested in finding meaning & purpose in Life through their struggles. Depression and anxiety are symptoms of a greater bio-psycho-spiritual challenge. By exploring the particular life-transitional stressors (such as facing cancer or another life crisis), that trigger anxiety or sadness, we then delve into patterns of 'stuckness' that help liberate clients to be free to be their true authentic selves.

You may be experiencing difficulties in your relationships with family, friends, bosses and coworkers, or struggling with long-term issues related to difficulty achieving personal goals, grief and loss, depression and anxiety, or other issues. Past ways of dealing with problems may no longer be working and/or have become self-defeating. Please contact me to discuss how psychotherapy might help you make different choices as you deal with current life stresses, or long-standing problems.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
