I have particular experience and interest in working with complex trauma, anxiety, identity development, sexuality development, relational difficulties, existential dilemmas, and survivors of childhood abuse.
I believe in the art of therapy and the power of the therapeutic alliance. I view therapy as a journey in which two people walk alongside one another in an attempt to better understand who the individual is and how they fit into the world around them.

We often define ourselves by our relationships: mother, daughter, brother, father, son and often by the quality of those primary connections. When an important relationship encounters challenges, whether through separation, estrangement, alienation, loss and/or time, we can feel confused and hurt. Let's work together to heal those relationships and repair the connections, to feel complete and whole and develop our own identity with love and understanding.

Life is a journey in which there are times we encounter obstacles, in the form of challenges. These challenges may cause us to struggle with overwhelming and emotionally distressing feelings; such sadness, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, fear, worry, or anxiousness. Negative thoughts and feelings can lead to distorted thinking patterns, low frustration tolerance or cause us to be judgmental of ourselves; ultimately effecting our mood. Far too often the inability to cope and the shame associated with these feelings causes us to feel as if we are alone. Well, I want you to know that you are not alone.

My life purpose is to break generational curses and make mental health a household conversation. Being a woman of color, mental health has not always been an assessable conversation. In the black community, we are always told to be strong, get over things quickly, and keep looking forward. Unfortunately, that meant we spent years overlooking normal human emotions that caused us to develop bad and unhealthy habits and relationships as an adult. Now, being a mental health professional and therapist, I am destined to make a difference, make mental health an enjoyable conversation, and continue to help bridge the gap.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
