There are times when the tasks of life seem insurmountable and too much to bear. I take a practical approach to counseling that is grounded in honesty, humor, non-judgment, and personal reflection. Sankofa means "It is not forbidden to go back and fetch what you forgot". Our past experiences, family history, and beliefs and values contribute to how we manage life's challenges. Looking to your past uncovers valuable lessons. I believe that positive change occurs through building on the individual's strength and focusing on the power of relationship, and past success as the primary source of healing and personal growth.

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. A common reason for beginning therapy is that some aspect of life does not feel as though it is working leaving you feeling frustrated, anxious, or unfulfilled. I enjoy working with people who have had successes in life, yet struggle to maintain happiness, energy, and a positive self-view. We work together to identify problems, both current and past, and new ways of working through them. I focus on the whole person in order to help people live their life in a way that feels whole, integrated, and satisfying.

I believe people carry the answers they seek inside them. Therapy provides a safe place to feel heard, to better listen to yourself, to find your truth and your voice. It can also be a place to practice expressing yourself in new ways; using the therapy relationship to break destructive or unhelpful communication patterns.

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” These words spoken by Socrates have been, whether known or not consciously known, the guiding force that has brought individuals, families, and couples to my office. Whether they have been experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship stress, illness, or substance abuse, a common thread runs through them all: the desire to feel more connected to others and to themselves; to experience a sense of aliveness and joy through such relationships. In your strive for wholeness, I pay attention to your unique life story to support you in reclaiming your authentic self.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
