Do you find yourself feeling stuck or notice feeling overwhelmed with things you previously were not bothered by? These are challenging times and maybe you aren’t feeling quite like yourself. Starting therapy can feel scary and I want you to know you are not alone in this feeling. Therapy can be hard work, as it requires you to share and be vulnerable. It also allows you the space to process independently from others’ opinions or attitudes to sort through thoughts and emotions. As a therapist, it is important to me to meet you where you are in your journey to balance and healing.

I'd be a good fit if you're motivated, curious, open, flexible in thought, committed to the therapy process, and willing to do hard work. I'll work hard, too. If your needs and goals are to feel calmer, have a more integrated sense of self, feel more secure and confident, to grow and expand your thought processes, to organize past life events, develop/increase spirituality, work towards independence, and promote holistic well-being through the use of evidenced-based techniques and theories, I'd be a good fit! I also love pets. I have 2 dogs & 2 cats. I have training and certification in pet loss and grief. I value all relationships.

A collaborative perspective is important. That's why working together toward developing a good rapport and trust is needed in therapy. My style and approach includes warmth, sensitivity, honesty and humor, laughing is healing. Change comes with being understood, listened to and feeling comfortable. Healing starts with courage and wisdom and coming to therapy is a big step. Everyone's journey to healing is different, therefore I do my best to tailor treatment to fit your needs. Therapy works best when it engages the whole person, body, mind, emotions and spirit to assist in reaching the best outcome. Looking forward to meeting you.

I believe each individual has the potential to grow at any age. My ultimate focus in therapy is to not merely eliminate “symptoms” but to increase your fulfillment in life, as defined by you. This means treatment is customized to meet YOUR needs so you can meet your goals. I provide therapy for a variety of clinical disorders, including but not limited to anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, & interpersonal difficulties. I am SW-friendly and MAP-informed. I believe in the potential for individual and emotional growth, striving to provide a safe and warm environment in which you can explore and thrive. Therapy is not "one-size-fits all."

As some people like to say: when life gives you lemons, make lemonade! However, in those moments of hardship or change, hurt or grief, this isn't always the easiest task. That is where I come in! I have a strange belief that, as therapists, when we are kind, supportive and real, and we seem like real human beings ourselves, therapy can be a lot more successful. A strong, trusting bond within the therapeutic relationship is essential for progress, and I hope that by being real myself, I can invite you to be your authentic, vulnerable self in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space with me.

Hi there! I’m Nicole (they/them), a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW). I have a BA in psychology and a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from St. Catherine University. My therapeutic approach is relational, collaborative, and affirming. I recognize the role that systems of oppression have on well-being and thus strive to center anti-oppressive and liberatory practices in my work. I also work from a trauma-informed, attachment-based, harm reductive, and sex-positive lens.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
