I have a range of experiences but have focused on addressing challenges to co-parenting and other family dynamics for traditional and non-traditional families, working through intimacy concerns, including the unique experiences of infidelity, and eliminating the use of emotional, psychological and physical abuse within intimate and familial relationships.
My name is Dr. Theron Parsons and I am an experienced, licensed clinical social worker who takes a supportive, sex-positive approach in working with individuals and couples seeking to improve intimacy and communication while empowering personal growth. I am a strong advocate and ally in meeting the common and unique needs of the LGBT community and their families. I have also spent a decade as a dedicated anti-violence counselor working with clients individually, and in groups, who are seeking to empower themselves through assertive non-violence in their social, professional, and intimate relationships.

I focus on helping clients strengthen meaningful relationships, establish a sense of meaning and purpose, and foster connection in their lives. I help clients move forward using practical solutions while also developing an understanding of the underlying issues that contribute to their struggles. Coming to therapy gives you a place where someone will listen without judging you and offer new ways of thinking about yourself and your problems, and I welcome the opportunity to help you create the life you want to be living.

I believe that everyone has the capacity to grow and change. I work with families and couples who may be questioning their connection to one another, and with individuals who feel stuck, unmotivated, or afraid. As a family therapist, I encourage people to explore how the different systems they are a part of impact the quality of their lives. How does their family function? Their place of work? Their culture? Together we explore how making changes in ourselves impacts our relationships to these different systems. We change our world by changing our relationship to it.

As a therapist, my approach is eclectic, informed by psychodynamic, humanistic, mindfulness-based and cognitive behavioral practices. I view each client's life as a constantly shifting ecosystem, and I believe that successful interventions are multifaceted. I strive to cultivate cultural humility in myself, and to help clients understand and re-craft personal narratives according to their values. In addition, I help clients to navigate romantic and family relationships as well as friendships. One of my primary goals as a therapist is to understand the unique and varied challenges of the LGBTQ community; being "LGBTQ friendly" is not enough.

I have provided psychotherapy for over 35 years. I listen to your concerns and your strengths to find the best ways to help you make the changes needed. You may have already made some changes and these are vital to build upon. No concern is too small, and we will often see a snowball of positive changes occur.

"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." --Albus Dumbuledore. Seeking therapy for yourself and your loved ones, is the first step to making your desire for happiness a reality. Although you may not know what makes you happy, the fact that you know you cannot continue to feel the way you do or be in your current situation, demonstrates your willingness to make the necessary changes toward a more fulfilling life.

I am currently accepting virtual-therapy clients from Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. The decision to seek therapy is a very important decision, but choosing the right therapist is even more important since one of the best predictors of a positive therapy outcome is the fit between client and therapist. I strive to provide the people with whom I work an environment that is comfortable, nonjudgmental, and genuinely validating. My job is to provide a space for you to access your strengths and attributes, and with this I can provide psychological approaches to help you address the concerns that brought you in for therapy.

Welcome, I believe therapy is a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. I also believe it is a collaborative relationship that is built on trust. From the outside, you seem to have it all together. You work really hard on the details, after all, you are responsible for everyone and everything. But you can’t shake the voice inside your head which screams you’re failing. Even though you put everyone’s needs in front of your own, you feel like you’re falling short as a mom. You can’t even remember what your hobbies are, let alone what really makes you happy. You’ve had enough, you don’t think you can keep holding it together.

Infidelity Therapists

How does therapy for infidelity work?

A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.

How long does therapy for infidelity take?

Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.

How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?

When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.

How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?

Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
