What Is Infidelity?
Infidelity is exciting and seductive. It gives the adulterer new life, and a feeling of rejuvenation and joy. The person betrayed, however, feels like all life has been sucked out of the air. What can lead to such a dissolution? All relationships are problematic, but a dalliance shouldn't feel insurmountable. Yet, the person with the wandering eye gets thrown into the dog house, and the person who was betrayed feels the relationship is irreparable. Infidelity is breaking a promise to remain faithful to a sexual partner. That promise can take many forms, from marriage vows sanctified by the state to privately uttered verbal agreements between lovers. As unthinkable as the notion of breaking such bonds may be, infidelity is all too common. And when it does happen, it raises thorny and painful questions. Should you stay? Can trust be rebuilt? Or maybe there's no choice but to pack up and move on.
