Emotionally Focused Therapy offers us a map to help you find your way back to the safety and connection you so badly desire.
Couples often enter my office feeling like their best efforts to share with their partner are met with anger, defensiveness or nothing at all. They so badly want to feel close and understood, but with each attempt to reach out they once again feel hurt and alone. Their partner often feels like despite their best efforts, they keep hearing what they got wrong leaving them feeling like they can’t ever seem to get it right. As these stuck places continue, of course it is easy to start to feel exhausted and hopeless as it seems you are all out of moves and maybe even tired of trying.

Emotionally Focused Therapy is backed by both data and science.
I work with couples who are tired of having the same conversations over and over again and never having a different outcome. Couples who are ready to do deep work together that fundamentally changes not just the relationship but also helps each partner to grow individually. Together we work to create sustainable changes in the relationship that will shift interactions and the way of being together through. The work we do helps each person gain new insights into their own perspective, as well as accessing perspectives of their partner.

Have you and your partner lost your spark? In the beginning, you felt seen and heard. Now, you find yourselves in a pattern of negativity, blocked communication, and disconnection. You wonder…Will my partner and I ever reconnect emotionally and/or physically? You want to feel closeness again but fear and doubt weigh heavily on your heart and mind. Couples therapy is a safe space to strengthen your communication, embrace vulnerability together, and rediscover deep connection no matter the season (dating, premarital, marital, second marriage) or constellation (traditional, open, LGTBQ, secular, religious) of your relationship.

Far too often, life does not go as we hope or plan. It is at those times that we can truly benefit from supportive others showing us that we are not alone, and the powerful experience of someone validating, while also empowering us to overcome, our challenges. I believe that therapy is a space that can offer this support, and I value the chance to help individuals navigate life's transitions and obstacles. Through my training and work experiences, I have learned to empathize, and work effectively, with college students and individuals across the lifespan, from diverse backgrounds, and with a wide-range of concerns.

Looking for mental health help but the idea of traditional therapy kind of freaks you out? Sweet, I can help with that. I’m a licensed therapist, but work as a life coach so I can be a little less clinical and a lot more authentic. I’m a big believer that most people don’t need someone to unpack their problems and give them a worksheet for an hour once a week, but really need someone to walk alongside them, and encourage them step by step. Whether you are hoping to finally overcome that dang anxiety that keeps you stuck, or feel good in your body for the first time in your life, or just want help reaching some new goals, I got you.

You want to help and support your child. You've read all the parenting articles and parenting blogs but feel stuck. Perhaps your child has gone through an unspeakable trauma and you also feel lost trying to navigate life. Or maybe you are at your breaking point with your child's behavior and you think, "What am I doing wrong? Something has to change, but how?" PERHAPS you yourself need support as you manage to be the caregiver to everyone but yourself. You are starting to realize your past is impacting your present. You carry with you baggage that you know you should deal with, but instead stuff it inside hoping it will close.

Being human is complex and brings a plethora of emotions your way. There are highs, lows, twists, and turns. At times the emotion we experience is overwhelming and the natural urge is to resist the feeling, to push it all away. The struggle to resist painful emotions, thoughts, memories, etc. is exhausting. It is through acceptance that a person can begin healing, coping, and growing into their best self. I have experience working with PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Borderline Personality Disorder, etc., allowing me to help others learn new ways of addressing unwanted emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

Immediate openings for Telehealth! Everyone's journey through life is different and will look different for everyone. I believe that we learn from our environment and experiences. Sometimes the behaviors, ideas, and beliefs we learned don't always transfer to our current reality. Often times we learn things to help us survive situations but once we overcome sad situations, those behaviors aren't needed anymore and cause havoc in our lives and relationships. I help my clients understand and unravel their behaviors, beliefs, ideas, and thought patterns and replace them with ones that support their lives and relationships now.

I enjoy working with those that are "misunderstood". This is generally those with ADHD and Autism or even teens who are in the LGBTQ+ community or going through a major life change (i.e turning 18, going to college). It could even be compounded by trauma. My main goal through therapy is to work towards exploring how life experiences may have contributed to your perception of self. The ultimate goal for my clients is acceptance. Whether that's accepting themselves, their past, or what they can/cannot control.

Things were going great. You got the job, you’re in a relationship, you have great friends but then, suddenly, life didn’t feel fulfilling anymore. Your anxiety started sneaking up again, your trauma started resurfacing, and your self-esteem got lower than ever before. You’ve tried all the things to help yourself get out of this funk, but nothing seems to work. And you question if this your new reality.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
