In addition, I specialize in providing therapy to women for OB/GYN related issues: infertility, depression or anxiety during pregnancy or the postpartum year, and pregnancy loss.
It is deeply discouraging when you try to change painful feelings, behaviors or life situations and you can't. If this is your experience, I am available to help restore your hope and confidence. As a psychologist, I combine years of training and experience providing researched treatments with warmth, intuition and a belief in the power of the human spirit to create a better life. I am continually inspired by my clients when they work hard to achieve their therapeutic goals and they discover their personal strengths.

I specialize in helping couples understand and improve their distressed relationships. Distressed relationships are characterized by recurrent negative patterns of interaction and conflict that create emotional distance, misunderstanding, frustration and pain. Partners are often left feeling alone, isolated and hopeless as a result of these negative interactional patterns. Many distressed couples do not feel secure, protected or cared for in their relationships when these negative patterns take over. If you or your partner can relate to this type of relationship distress, consider contacting me for a consultation.

Many of us are fortunate to have friends and family who listen to our problems and concerns. But, sometimes, that may not be enough and we need the help and guidance of a skilled and experienced professional. We also want to be sure that we are getting an objective and unbiased opinion. I am a very active participant in the sessions, giving feedback and making suggestions. Most people come in with specific "here and now" issues they want to resolve. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of several approaches useful in addressing both current issues and those of longer duration.

We are confronted with stress and negativity on a daily basis. At times it may feel too overwhelming to cope with it all. Perhaps you are seeking treatment to cope with a loss, to manage anxiety or mood swings, or are struggling with a difficult relationship. Therapy provides you with a safe, supportive and healing environment to explore your innermost thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement. I practice using a psychodynamic approach, also known as insight-oriented therapy. I also utilize other approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, and mindfulness techniques.

Pierce takes special interest in Brainspotting and working with trauma. Brainspotting allows for deeper level processing through the body’s innate natural healing processes. Pierce believes we all have innate skills, but we are not always equipped to use those skills needed. Pierce’s number one goal is to create a safe space for those I work with while working towards the clients’ self-inspired goals. “All I ask is for you to come as you are and be open.”

Finding a therapist you connect with can feel so overwhelming you avoid it. But that is probably why you're here, because there have been things you've been avoiding and you're ready to get some help. Being foster and adoptive parents is way harder than most people understand, especially those who haven't experienced the invasive and arduous process. As a teen or young adult, you might be feeling lost or angry. You might be having a harder time than others figuring out who are you are and where you fit in the world. My style fuses warmth, humor, and directness.

Therapy is an opportunity for an individual, a couple or a family to learn about themselves in ways that are ultimately strengthening. It can be hard to be hopeful when you are in crisis, feeling helpless, confused, and in pain. I think these periods of struggle can be useful in identifying how you think, behave, and relate to yourself and others in ways that may be ineffectual. While there are mental health situations that require medical intervention, I believe it is also possible through therapy to develop the self-awareness and skills necessary to feel better, and stay well.

Infertility Therapists

How can infertility affect couples and their relationship?

Clients who are dealing with infertility may experience conflict and communication problems. It’s not unusual for shame, blame, and guilt to arise in cases of infertility, whether the source of the problem is one partner or both. This means that clients are upset and pulling away from their partner just when they need them the most. Some clients may find it difficult to spend time around friends and family who are pregnant. Friends and family can also make hurtful comments that increase tension during this time.

How does therapy for infertility issues work?

The therapist will begin by gathering information about the client or couple and make a treatment plan for their specific concerns. In addition to addressing common mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma reactions or PTSD, therapists can help clients improve their decision-making and deal with stressors unique to infertility. Some examples include coping with the “two-week wait” before a pregnancy test, the distress associated with a failed attempt or miscarriage, and the shame and blame sometimes associated with reproductive concerns.

What type of therapy is best for infertility issues?

Many therapists offer psychotherapy for individuals and couples who are dealing with infertility issues. Some helpful therapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which can aid clients in reframing negative thoughts about their situation. Expressive writing and art therapy can help clients process difficult feelings. Clients might also benefit from group therapy to experience support from others who are dealing with the same problems.

How long does therapy for infertility issues take?

There is no set length for therapy that addresses infertility or reproductive concerns. Some clients might find it helpful to continue therapy during their pregnancy to have healthy ways to cope with any associated stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma. Some clients who decide not to pursue fertility treatments might benefit from the support of a therapist. The duration of therapy varies depending on the individual client’s specific needs and goals.
