You may be seeking therapy because you need extra support coping with the stress of daily life. Maybe you are working hard to regulate intense emotions or to feel like past traumas are truly in the past. I believe in working together to tailor an approach that honors your unique needs and fosters a safe space for you to heal and grow. I am licensed as a counselor and an art therapist, so our work together could be traditional talk therapy, as well as art therapy. Whether you consider yourself an artist or haven't touched a crayon since grade school, art therapy can be a dynamic way to learn healthy skills and find greater meaning.

There can be times in our life where we feel stuck, or in a pit without a way out. This may be life's normal rhythm or could be unresolved trauma, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, addictions, relationship conflict, or grief / loss. It's possible you do not even know why you feel stuck. Maybe you tried to climb out on your own, only to slip back deeper than before. In my 25 year career as a police officer, I have been where many of you are. I have now dedicated my life to helping individuals find the strength and resiliency to move towards healing. I can help you find your path forward as well.

You just finished a productive day at work and felt pretty good about yourself. Then that voice pipes up. “You probably screwed something up” “Everyone is judging you behind your back?” “You try so hard but always mess up.” “You can’t win.” No matter what you do, this inner critic never stops. Every time your confidence starts to grow, and you consider trying something new, that voice returns to fill you with fear and doubt. It seems like you only know how to focus on the bad and never give yourself any credit for the good. You wish you could somehow silence this part of you, but it feels hopeless. You don’t know what to do.

LGBTQ+ Ally. Locally owned, private practice, Main St. Reisterstown. Appointments currently available in person or virtual. -
Imagine you see a dog that keeps trying to climb trees and bury nuts. It would seem really odd, right. What if I told you that dog was raised by squirrels? Now it all makes sense! You make sense too. We are the products of our childhoods, the families that raise us, the friends we loved and fought with and the larger society around us. You might still be "burying nuts" in your life, but if you are ready to grow and move beyond these old coping mechanisms, therapy is the place to do it.

A young mother walked into my office crying and expressing her belief that asking for help indicated weakness. I thought to myself, it takes a strong person to ask for help. She had forgotten how strong and important she was.
I believe the single most important ingredient in a successful therapy is establishing, nurturing, and maintaining a safe, trusting, and genuine relationship. While making use of CBT, psychodynamic and family systems approaches to treatment, I am also flexible in assisting patients in understanding patterns of behavior that may contribute to their conflicts and worries.

Life is filled with loss, yet we live in a grief-illiterate culture that wants to bypass pain at all costs, leaving us unprepared to navigate grief that's present in all of life's transitions. When looked at through the lens of loss, many emotional states that plague us – anxiety, depression, trauma – can be tied to unresolved grief in our lives. Every loss must be grieved to find a path towards healing.

Change is happening within us and around us all the time. Even when we feel the most stuck in old habits and patterns that no longer work for us, we are still changing. Counseling can help us see these patterns and shift the dynamic to help us move and grow in ways which reflect our wishes and values. I enjoy listening to the stories other people tell me about their lives. I like to help them identify and enhance their strengths and to find the patterns of action or inaction that need to shift to allow for new growth.

I've worked with many of these clients to help them discover the cause of these feelings, to talk about the emotional pain, to help them heal.

I have worked with a diverse group of clients struggling with anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma, body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), depression, and more. I am also interested in supporting individuals living with chronic illness, exploring how health challenges can impact anxiety, mood, and overall well-being. I strive to create a warm, supportive environment where you can not just survive, but flourish.

Have you ever felt judged, excluded, or silenced by your faith community? Maybe you carry guilt for asking spiritual questions, or feel like something’s wrong with you for not “believing right.” Whether you call it religious trauma or not, the ache is real—and it can leave you feeling disconnected, ashamed, or confused. If you come from a Christian (or Christian-adjacent) background and feel stuck, unseen, or spiritually displaced, I offer a safe place to breathe, question, and heal.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
