I’m passionate about helping people explore their substance use, its effect on their mental health, how it may be impacting other areas such as relationships or jobs, and setting realistic goals moving towards a more peaceful, fulfilling life.
A truly fantastic therapist can be life changing. Learning to be honest with ourselves while sharing intimate details of our lives can be overwhelming, especially for those in vulnerable positions. I provide a safe space where all can be heard and validated while developing a unique treatment plan tailored to each individual’s most pressing needs. I genuinely believe that what is mentionable is manageable. Therapy provides an opportunity to gain insight, heal from past wounds, and work towards your goals in a supportive and collaborative environment. I’m committed to helping my clients live their very best lives.

and have conducted about 3000 substance use evaluations for local courts and attorneys.
I work with individuals, adolescents and adults, who want or need to find their own path to inner peace and harmony without the use of alcohol or drugs, or the use of rage or isolation, or the creation of chaos as a distraction; people who wrestle with the parts of themselves that keep getting in their way. I also work with families who are confused how best to help a loved one who is abusing alcohol and other drugs.

Within each one of us is an inner child that holds the many hurts of our life. To survive this world, we hide the child away, building strong brick walls, preventing the child from emerging. Sometimes we use our “busyness” to ignore the cries of the child behind the barricades. Or we turn to anger, addiction and numbness to drown out the deafening cries. In our moments of brokenness, we stop and wonder, “Is this how I will have to live the rest of my life?” Trauma touches us all in different ways. The role of a therapist is to guide you through the pain and hurt so you can live a life of intention, meaning and inner peace.

Are you seeking a therapist that is creative, easy to relate to, and a connection that is safe, trusting and reliable? Not to mention experienced. Everyone has different needs and circumstances, whether it be trauma related, relationship issues, life altering events, grief, mental health or health related needs, or just plain stress and critical life decision making. It is helpful to have someone to talk that out with, a person who can offer a fresh perspective and skills in navigating through these issues. Possibly in a brief or longer term treatment.

My view on successful psychotherapy is that it provokes insight, motivation and productivity for you, not only in session but out in life. Together we create a purely confidential, client-focused relationship to distinguish your desired outcomes. Then, using a blend of mind-body and cognitive-behavioral techniques, we explore your thoughts and how they shape the way you feel and behave. We also develop new patterns of thought and behaviors to create the way you want your life to be. Lifestyle behaviors such as diet, exercise, self-care and social interaction also come into play as they shape the whole person.

Are you feeling stuck? Does it feel like patterns keep repeating themselves? Are you wondering how to change negative behavior patterns that interfere with achieving your goals? Our work together would identify how past experiences have shaped how you approach life today. In doing this, you can be freed to change the behaviors that prevent you from moving forward. I believe in utilizing people's strengths and competencies to help individuals access those parts of themselves to facilitate healing and to become empowered.

I believe that life is all about experience and relationships that affect different individuals in different ways, and for different reasons. For that reason, I have an integrated and eclectic approach using relational, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, supportive and family psychotherapy treatment modalities to treat Eating Disorders, Anxiety, Depression, OCD and Personality Disorders including self injurious behaviors. Treatment is individualized to the needs of each client and collaboration can be coordinated with a nutritionist, psychiatrist and physician when appropriate. I have a group therapy program for adolescents, young adults and women struggling with eating disorders, body image and self -esteem issues.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
