I work with gay, lesbian, bi+, trans and queer persons, as well as couples in non-traditional relationships.
I believe therapy can help you achieve a more satisfying and fulfilling life. Struggling with difficult emotions and life circumstances can be an isolating experience. Having someone to listen can help. We will work together to discuss your concerns and dig into your experience. This experience will truly be your time to talk and to get to know yourself better.

There is no single way to live a fulfilling life. All of us need a safe place to talk about what we're experiencing. Expressing your thoughts and feelings to another person is an essential part of transformation. This is especially true when done in a therapeutic environment where you can explore new ideas and make your own decisions about your life without fear of intrusion from the other. My clinical intention is to help clients see and experience themselves in a new way.

I specialize in children, adolescents, adults and families. I have helped clients suffering from trauma, depression, anxiety related disorders, behavioral issues, and grief and loss. My approach is person centered, focused on creating a caring and empathetic therapeutic relationship, while utilizing varied interventions, including psychodynamic, behavioral and cognitive based techniques, family systems theories, and attachment based strategies. In addition to more traditional approaches, I am a strong proponent of creative expressive therapy. Through expressive interventions my clients have learned to develop appropriate self expression of feelings, self confidence, effective coping and conflict resolution strategies, and pro social communication to help foster appropriate peer relations.

At some point, we all face the need to change something in our lives. You may want to improve your relationships, reduce emotional pain, change behavior patterns that don’t work for you, tackle a specific problem/symptom, or learn more about yourself. Change can be difficult, but you don’t have to do it alone. Therapy offers a different perspective on your situation, along with encouragement and expertise to help you make the changes you want. I am a skilled therapist with advanced training in DBT and couples treatment, and 30+ years of experience working with adults, adolescents and couples in both short and long-term treatment.

Do you want to be less reactive and more intentional? Do you wish for the focus to do what you need to do? Do you often feel anxious, but not sure why? You’re in the right place. In recognizing a need, and seeking help, you've taken a huge step towards a more aligned life. When we realize that own minds, not just life circumstances, can create barriers to our happiness, we're on the right path. I specialize in working with creative people, those perhaps labelled "too sensitive", or who have ADHD and/or anxiety, and are actively working to enhance their relationships, find purposeful work and listen to their own inner guidance.

Never thought you'd find yourself looking for a therapist, or had a disappointing therapy experience before? Much of the success of treatment depends on finding someone whom you can trust, who is as invested in seeing you make progress as you are. I have a solid track record working with children, adolescents, adults and families to create change in their lives...even when situations feel hopeless.

Do you sometimes have a hard time accepting parts of yourself or your feelings that you are experiencing? Perhaps you know what you should do, but just can't do it no matter how much advice others give you. Or perhaps you feel sad, angry or stuck and don't see a way out. Therapy can be a place where you can gain clarity regarding your feelings, needs and desires as well as a place to look at parts of yourself you might be scared to look at. You are never one identity, one feeling, one experience, but rather many all at once. Life is hard, especially under captialism and systemic oppression. You got this, one step at a time.

Do you ever feel like you've lost your joy or that you have no purpose? Life never stops happening and some days we manage it better than others. Sometimes it may feel like you're stuck on a hamster wheel that you can't get off. You are not alone; I've even been there myself. We all have roles that we must fulfill and responsibilities that we must manage, but sometimes that consumes us and we lose ourselves. I once read that "we sometimes put so much pressure on ourselves that life can feel like acting instead of living". When was the last time you got to take off your mask and show your true self?

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
