I incorporate IFS, narrative, attachment, & somatic approaches to help clients identify triggers, release limiting beliefs, explore identity, foster emotional health, enhance worthiness, & heal from trauma.
My practice is rooted in compassion, curiosity, and self-discovery. My goal is to provide a safe container for you to bring all parts of yourself forward, explore what is blocking you from your joy, connect with your inner wisdom, & strengthen your ability to create loving connections with both yourself and others. I enjoy working with folks interested in delving deeper within themselves with curiosity and openness. Together, we'll identify different parts of your self and the stories they hold, creating space to rewrite your narratives from a place of empowerment and work towards meaningful change.

I am committed to effect change through the process of psychotherapy using a direct, reality based approach. Although I draw from many different therapeutic modalities, my theoretical orientation is consistent with cognitive-behavioral theories. I believe social learning, modeling, and reinforcement all play a significant role in how ones personality developes, how one thinks, behaves, & feels as they get older. I believe refuting negative and irrational thinking will likely increase healthy feelings and behaviors that will greatly impact ones overall wellbeing. I believe that effective communication is the key to building healthy relationships, rebuilding severed relationships, & strengthening present ones.

I have a focus on providing collaborative support within a framework of social justice and a strong belief that each person has everything they need within them and sometimes we all lose touch with these things and could use some outside support to discover our answers. I view my role as a therapist as the bridge to the answers within that may be difficult to see. I believe that the context of our lives is important to understanding our experiences.

Are you feeling lost in your own story? Breaking patterns, finding your story, rewriting the journey, understanding ourselves, and designing new paths can be ways out of cycles of behavior. Living your best life takes work, honesty and exploration. Working together, we can develop strategies and tools you can continue to use now and throughout your life. Change begins when we start to look more closely at our lives and think intentionally about who we are and who we want to be.

I am now maintaining a waitlist; contact for scheduling options. Adolescence and adulthood are challenging; coping with anxiety, depression, and the daily barriers of life can easily complicate things further. You may struggle to cope with and find balance between the frustrations of school, relationships, work, and family. Maybe you feel it is time to focus on personal growth and seek harmony. Taking the first steps can feel extraordinarily challenging but I will be there to provide support and guidance within your journey. I believe everyone has the capacity to manage life's challenges and I can provide you the skills to do so.

Existential therapy believes that although humans are essentially alone in the world, they long to be connected with themselves and others. I seek to avoid using models that may label people. Truth is discovered subjectively, by each individual. My practice is often, directly aimed at collaboratively making sense of one's experience(s) in order to forge new meanings and develop new identities. From a strengths based perspective, I collaborate with my clients to increase self-awareness and understanding in order to transform fragile or confusing relationships into ones that can be more clear, strong and connected. This includes a specialty in working with couples.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with nearly two decades of experience with clients of all ages. I specialize in working with anxiety, depression, and managing the stress of everyday life. I also offer an outdoor/adventure based program for teens using hands-on projects as a conduit for building confidence, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness. Unfortunately. this is only available to private-pay clients. I don't deploy a single therapeutic technique. Rather, I blend the best parts of many different approaches. My clients typically find me warm and validating while gently pushing them to grow in the specific areas.

My practice consists of a mix of Cognitive Behavioral, Narrative, and Solution Focused therapy techniques.
I operate under the belief that mental health and wellness exists at the junction of the biological, social and psychological facets of an individual, and that a balance is needed to address the human condition. With this in mind even the most difficult of concerns to address can be a profound force for positive change in someone's life.

Hi, my name is Karl Speirs. I am an EMDRIA certified therapist, approved consultant and EMDR trainer. I am licensed in CT and VT. I use a warm and supportive, yet semi-structured and intentional approach for both in-person and telehealth sessions. I do both short-term and more comprehensive therapy. I can work with you to construct a plan to overcome some of life's challenges and help move you to a more desired future outcome. I use systems theory (how we interact with the world) and EMDR therapy (helping brains naturally rewire in a more adaptive way), in combination with various other approaches.

Currently not accepting new clients. "Long-lasting responses to trauma result not simply from the experience of fear and helplessness but also from how our bodies interpret those experiences." (Rachel Yehuda) Trauma can be thought of as an experience that overwhelms the individual's ability to process the event as it is happening. I work with preteens, adolescents and adults who have been impacted by trauma, to help bring relief to their lives. By partnering with individuals to help release stress, we help you create a fresh, new framework for future experiences.

NO availability or waitlist at this time! Oftentimes clients come to therapy stuck in patterns that are not serving them well, and they do not understand how they ended up where they are. My goal in working with clients is to help them know, understand, and have compassion for themselves, and in the case of couples and families, for each other as well. I provide a safe and nurturing environment where clients are free to express their thoughts and feelings, and I work to help them make sense of it all. My goal is to meet clients where they are, and give them the tools to get to where they want to be emotionally and psychologically.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
