Thank you for reaching out. I recognize how this can sometimes be a very difficult first step. I specialize in treating depression/anxiety disorders, women's issues, life-stage transitions, and bereavement. My approach is strength-based and compassionate, grounded in the principles of Psychodynamic and Relational models. I offer support and validation, with a focus on what does work, as opposed to what isn't working. We will co-create strategies that reflect your values while navigating the sometimes disorienting terrain of change. I can help you develop new skill-sets to help heal and increase quality of life.

It is OK to ask for help! Loads of information coming at our nervous systems on a regular basis, paired with unreasonable expectations often leave us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, angry and hopeless. When our brains and bodies are out of whack, they signal us that we need help by making it hard to ignore! I offer guidance and nurturing through somatic regulation, self expression, discovery of strengths, attuned listening, validated emotions, and more. I work with individuals of all ages in a warm, supportive, and safe environment.

I specialize in helping people work through anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences and adjust to life changes. My goal is to help you find a way to identify and then move towards what is most important in your life. This can entail identifying obstacles that can keep us trapped in old patterns and habits that no longer serve us well, such as traumatic memories or simply negative concepts about ourselves. Entering therapy is signaling that you are ready to make significant change - whether in behaviors or thoughts - to find deeper meaning in your life.

My belief that each of us has the potential to heal and transform, guides and informs my work as a therapist. I help people overcome anxiety, deal with depression, and emerge from trauma. I approach each person individually with warmth and compassion, and I strive to help harness a person's own natural strengths to work through problems of substance use, major life transitions, or concerns centering on gender and sexual identity. My therapeutic approach stems from extensive training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Problem Solving Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - including Cognitive Processing Therapy for Trauma.

You are a woman who wants to feel like you have your feet underneath you, but deep down you are struggling with constantly feeling on edge or disconnected from life. You may have had a life changing event or maybe several events that are weighing heavily on you. You may be fed up trying to survive the day to day. You might not remember a time when things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to release the things weighing you down. You’re ready to have a better sense of control over your life. Most of all, you’re ready to transform into the best version of yourself.

State of Grace Counseling and Spiritual Coaching. I am currently accepting new clients. Clinical counseling and coaching services are different, and I welcome the opportunity to discuss both services with potential clients. As women navigate their life journey, they may find themselves caught in states of reactivity. Losing touch with the essence of who and what we are can result in feeling disconnected and anxious. This often leads to abandoning practices and rituals that nourish the body, mind and soul. In session, clients engage in practices which support rediscovering their potential and creating a life of balance and bliss.

I use the IFS model and a collaborative compassionate approach to help you identify and understand your inner system so you can connect with your core Self. Our sessions will also strongly focus on developing a trusting working relationship, with me but more importantly with yourself — helping you to minimize internal chaos and feel more balance and harmony. I am currently only accepting individual clients that are seeking to work in this modality or who are seeking treatment with EMDR. I am accepting couples who are interested in therapy.

You are doing so much, but you tell yourself it is not good enough. You walk by the mirror and check your reflection. Not good enough. Others give you praise, and you don't buy it; you may not even hear it. You keep telling yourself that when you reach your goal weight, you will be happy. When you finish this project at work, you will be happy. But those promises don't come true. Time and again you set a new goal, only to be let down. You want to break out of this cycle, but you don't know how. You may even feel ambivalent about asking for help, or making any changes.

My name is Rachel Gitelson and I specialize in the treatment of individuals, families, and providing parenting support. I use a person-centered, mindfulness based approach to my work, integrating cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic theories to treat the individual within the dynamics of their world. I support couples in the challenges of parenting in today’s world, and come from a strength-based perspective in which I believe we are all doing the best we can given the resources that we have. Additionally, I offer supervision to licensed therapists.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
