I provide both general psychotherapy and sex therapy, for which I maintain an inclusive and affirming stance.
Welcome! Congratulations on taking the first steps on your therapeutic journey! I am committed to helping my clients navigate the complexities of life. I strive to create a collaborative, warm, open environment in which clients can explore difficult issues with empathy, compassion, and, perhaps, a bit of humor. I believe that therapy is an opportunity to learn more about oneself, be heard and understood, and share sorrows, joys, and everything in between. It is a privilege to participate in my clients' journeys, and I take care to do so in a supportive, thoughtful manner tailored to each person's needs.

I have six years of post-doctoral training in sex therapy at the Institute For Sexuality and Intimacy in Belmont, Massachusetts.
I am a psychologist who began my career as a dancer and then became an expressive therapist, which grounds my treatment in both psyche and soma. I love working with couples around relationship issues and sexuality. My work is both psychodynamic and cognitive, drawing on the integration of logic, philosophy, and emotion. The most crucial component of successful treatment is a good sense of humor. I work to create a safe space for exploring any emotion or pattern, no matter complex.

My entire practice is dedicated to solving "Relationship problems." The treatment starts with your goals. For some, it is getting the communication skills and best practices for marital happiness. For others, it is helping couples save their marriage after broken trust. I have a unique background. While working at Harvard Medical School and the Human Sexuality & Relationship program at McLean Hospital, I developed and refined highly effective relationship systems and therapies. I am currently offering the sessions only on zoom.

Do you wish you could feel more intimate with your partner? Has your sexual relationship lost it's passion & playfulness If so, call Suki Hanfling for a free 20min. phone consultation to explore whether couples/sex/tx. might be helpful. Her approach emphasizes the individual growth of each partner and the enhancement of the relationship. Although there are multiple factors contributing to most difficulties, she begins by addressing the immediate causes: communication difficulties, being "time starved" and performance anxiety. When indicated, therapy can then focus on complex causes, such as trust, control, and intimacy.

As a classically trained psychologist, I view my work as a blend of art and science. My patients are generally competent, loving people who are struggling with painful issues related to relationships, sexuality, life changes, work and other stressful situations. Many also suffer from situational or long-standing feelings of depression, anxiety or inadequacy. All are motivated to make meaningful change. My style is open, relational, and collaborative, and my approach is based on decades of experience and a fundamental understanding that no two people are alike. Therapy focuses on both on symptom relief and personal growth.

You may be pursuing therapy to increase intimacy or enhance a stable relationship. Alternately, you may be overcome with frustration/grief/anger as, despite best efforts to resolve challenges, you're stuck in repetitive relationship patterns that can no longer be soothed, justified, or ignored. Perhaps you're single or in partnership, suffering from profound loneliness. I can help empower you (and partner(s) to awaken from toxic rules/expectations, and escape the prison of isolation, shame, blame, and silence. This empowerment allows for renewed capacity to give yourself, and those you love, compassion, acceptance, and freedom.

Therapy provides a space for us to develop a deeper understanding of our internal world, our patterns, and our suffering. Oftentimes, we might find that concepts and emotions left unattended to are keeping us stuck or unsatisfied. Together, we can be curious about your thoughts, feelings, and fantasies and uncover new meaning and ways of coping. I collaborate with patients to work towards a more fulfilling life and a better relationship with the self. I emphasize that you are the expert of your life, and empower you to make the changes you desire.

Let's think about our thinking. Curiosity and bravery are important aspects of any learning experience and these traits are equally important in psychotherapy. As a psychologist, I encourage my clients to be both brave and curious as we respectfully examine and process poignant thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Through this thoughtful process, the client is able to grow and gain self-confidence and improved internal emotional regulation. My goal or agenda for psychotherapy is not mine but yours, and I look forward to collaborating with you and bearing witness to your growth.

Sex Therapy

Who is sex therapy for?

Sex problems are common in relationships. Many people want a better sex life and want to feel loved and desired by their partner. It is difficult for couples to resolve sexual problems on their own because people often feel ashamed to talk about their sexual desires fearing they are not normal, when in fact a very broad range of preferences and behaviors are normal. A sex therapist can help clarify this and other matters.

Why do people need sex therapy?

Many people do not know how to talk about their erotic needs or their emotional needs, both of which are addressed in sex therapy. Couples often live with sexual difficulties for years before seeking help, and in that time, partners may experience so much disappointment and alienation that they may fear their problems mean they are incompatible. Once people experience disappointment, it is difficult to find resolution without help.

What happens in sex therapy?

People have many misconceptions about what takes place in sex therapy. First, it is a form of talk therapy in which partners discuss their sexual concerns; it does not involve touching or physical exploration of any kind. Sex therapy typically helps couples get comfortable talking to each other about sex so that, in the privacy of their home life, they can openly discuss their sexual desires and make decisions about what they want to do. Couples are typically assigned activities to do at home that build intimacy skills.

What kinds of problems do sex therapists treat?

Very often, partners differ in their degree of sexual desire and struggle over how often to have sex. Or they may have fights about porn use or have difficulty connecting sexually after one partner is unfaithful. Men may have problems with premature ejaculation. Women may find themselves struggling to become aroused or to achieve an orgasm. Sometimes partners feel like they have lost the sense of attraction to their partner. These are all common issues dealt with in sex therapy.
