Parenting Support Groups in Great Neck, NY

I have extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and offer group DBT skills training. Individuals who attend my DBT groups are required to be in individual therapy; if their therapist is not well-versed in DBT, I will work collaboratively with them to reinforce the skills learned in my groups.

The journey of life is one filled with joy, happiness, sadness, disappointments, loss and renewal. I feel my goal as a psychologist is to enable a child, adolescent, young adult, and adult find the strength to review life's troubling issues and form new perceptions which enables different outlooks on problems. I feel the only problems in life are situations that can not be resolved. Many times the resolutions are not what we thought life would offer us, but that is what we have. Helping parents to become more effective in how they interact with their children enabling more appropriate behaviors, self-esteem and an " I can do it attitude" building confidence and "healthy interacting". Parents learn the "win-win" way of parenting where children earn their privileges rather than expect them. All children deserve love, food, clothing (non-designer) and shelter. All other activities are earned just like adults have to go to work to get money. Children earn their privileges by fulfilling their responsibilities (brushing teeth, going to bed on time, playing appropriately, doing homework, etc) which builds self confidence and esteem.

The decision to enter therapy is not always easy. Choosing a therapist can also be difficult. I believe that the relationship between patient and therapist is one of the most important components in a person's treatment. I often refer to the therapy process as a playground because a playground is a safe place to explore and learn; so is therapy. Together we will explore and better prepare you to handle the emotions and difficulties that brought you to therapy. I specialize in working with childhood difficulties and bereavement, although my training is diverse.

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
