Grief Support Groups in New Hampshire

Mental health services are specifically geared toward older adults navigating challenges in every day life. Our approaches are person-centered and neuro-affirming that bridge the gap between the social and medical model of disability. We also provide family therapy for seniors and their families who are going through life transitions. Coaching and consulting services are designed to promote positive relationships and outcomes for the individual and within the organization. We provide in person, telehealth and at long term care facilities. Please visit our website at www.ostaracounselingandconsulting.com

As we all move through life, we experience any number of difficult situations such as acute grief, loss, disability and other challenges that create disruption in our lives.
Welcome! Thank you for visiting my page. I work specifically with older adults, people with disabilities and their caregivers. I believe that all stages in life present both opportunities and challenges and there is beauty in both. We can all get "stuck" in grief, loss, depression, anxiety and adjustment to health or life changes. I am a strengths based clinician who believes that everyone has the power to move through life's changes becoming "unstuck" while maintaining their identity and sense of empowerment. Together, we will help you to re-discover your sense of purpose and balance in life.

Life and death - perhaps the biggest adjustments of the human experience. Each can stir up feelings such as overwhelm, guilt, and loneliness. If someone you care about is seriously ill or has died, if you're grieving loss due to miscarriage/stillbirth, or are trying to conceive, prepare for birth, or adjust to postpartum life, know that you do not have to move through these chapters alone. I have personal and professional background supporting children/families through hospice/ grief and through the transition into parenthood. Together we'll create space to process your journey and identify tools to help you continue moving forward.

I am an EMDR clinician, and favor this modality when working with trauma and traumatic loss.
I work with clients who have been traumatized, helping them to process memories and manage emotions related to the trauma. I also work with families and help parents increase their skills. I address grief and bereavement issues, and facilitate a support group for people whose loved ones have been murdered, as well as seeing those people individually. I have experience working with dissociation.

Grief and Loss with EMDR therapy group: Next group cohort will begin 6/5/24. EMDR has been found to be very effective both for individual and group sessions. The group will be very small (max 6) and will offer people a space to process their losses without having to talk through the details of their experience (unless they choose to share). Please email me to schedule a 15 minute consultation call to be sure this is the right group for you. My office is on a second floor, so the ability to climb stairs are required.

I accept Self-pay and BCBS & Anthem insurance only. I support adults who are struggling with self-doubt, excessive worry, constant relationship problems, guilt, or traumatic memories. I can support you to find ways to gain the positive change you are seeking. I enjoy working with women and men who are struggling with difficult life situations. Find ways to feel more calm, confident, capable and connected. If talk therapy hasn't worked for you in the past, consider EMDR or Accelerated Resolution Therapy.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
