Utilizing my education in grief therapy and trauma training, my profession of 17 years in Hospice/Palliative Care, and my personal experience with losses of my own has proven to be most effective in providing my clients with empathy and compassion, a deeper understanding of and insight into problems, and much needed emotional support.
Are you suffering from a broken heart? Did a divorce, or the end of a romantic relationship cause it? Or have you experienced pet loss, death by suicide, homicide, overdose, or experience a toxic relationship? Grief is a person’s response to loss, entailing emotions, thoughts and behaviors as well as physiological changes. Grief is permanent after we lose someone close though it’s manifestations are variable both within and between people. We focus on promoting healing milestones and addressing stuck points in adapting to loss using active listening and personalized interventions with specific tools to help you cope with the loss.

They say separation and divorce are among the most stressful life events, second only to death. Often friends and family struggle to provide continual support as the litigation process can take months, if not years. In the meantime, the stress can lead to depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and poor interpersonal relations. Our group is open to any adult who is struggling during the separation or divorce process. Groups are held on Sunday evenings in our Merrillville office. Cooperative parenting is a process where parents agree to act jointly in the best interests of their children, by establishing safe homes for them and by consulting with one another concerning the needs of the children and their own needs as co-parents. Effective co-parenting arrangements contain the following use of skills: cooperation, communication, compromise, and consistency. These can grow over time to evolve effectively. This is a 9–10-week group where coparents are taught these very skills using a combination of lecture; activity; action and processing.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
