Alone in your grief? Surrounded by people who don't "get it" and expect you to "just get over it and move on"? Groups are powerful vehicles of support, healing, and transformation. For pet parents who need grief support in facing pet loss in any stage: anticipatory grief, planning a "lift up" instead of "put down" their pet, and also healing the grief that follows. I also offer services for individuals. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) / Tapping is a mind-body-energy technique that is considered a gentle method of reducing or eliminating psychological distress. EFT regulates the nervous system through self-stimulation (tapping) of acupressure points on the face and body. We will practice the self-help version of EFT as a self-care, calming technique. Using EFT in a group setting allows us to “borrow benefits” and can be even more supportive and healing as we build connection. Group dates: 10/5, 10/19/ 10/26, 11/2, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7, and 12/14.

Grief is a journey that we can learn to navigate.
Grief is our natural response to loss. It is not a disorder, nor does typical grief necessitate therapeutic treatment. Grief is a normal human experience that needs to be felt and processed. But sometimes our grief becomes stalled or derailed because healthy grieving has not been modeled or taught. Grief is meant to be an active process, a life skill that can be learned - rather than a passive experience to be endured. I offer professional guidance that helps people struggling with loss to discover where or why their unique grief journey got off track, and find their way back to the path where they can move forward through loss.

You imagined the path to parenthood to look a lot different. Pregnancy, trying to conceive, coping with losses and becoming a parent for the first (or umpteenth time) can be quite different than expected. It's important to get help if you're feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or anxious as you anticipate and cope with these transitions.

Anger is a signal from our brains telling us exactly what to do. We must learn how to use that signal and hear what anger is telling us to do we begin to use anger effectively. However, we tend to hold it in and let it build up until it comes out in unproductive ways. Once we know what the signal of anger is telling us to do, anger becomes a very useful emotion that we will understand and no longer fear.

PTSD is one of the most debilitating injuries to suffer from. It affects all areas of your life regardless of how you sustained the injury (e.g., sexual assault, physical assault, cumulative traumas, acute trauma, chronic, or complex, single incident, learning about a sudden and violent incident to a family member or friend, etc.). The devastation of such an injury is overwhelming and it is destructive to all areas of the person's life. This group will help you retake your life and grow from PTSD instead of being hindered by PTSD.

Grief is the natural reaction to loss. Grief is both a universal and a personal experience. This is a support group for those who have experienced personal losses. Participants will explore, within a trusting and nurturing environment, their reactions to loss, learn about the grieving process, develop strategies for coping and begin to integrate this change into their lives in order to move forward. We will explore topics such as the stages of grief, common grief reactions, myths about grieving and moving forward.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
