People say you have to let go and move on in your life, but they don't tell you what you need to do to accomplish that. The Grief Recovery Method Outreach Program not only makes that possible but provides partnerships and guidance to ensure that it happens. This eight-week group uses the Grief Recovery Method, an international, evidence-based technique. The program differs from other support groups in its action-based and directed approach, and is a great choice for grievers who want more than traditional support groups offer.

While I work with clients with varied needs, I specialize in treating three universal sources of pain: Grief, Trauma, and Addiction.
In my practice, I seek to foster compassion, creativity, and authenticity. I want each client to feel a new freedom: to choose how they respond to life, rather than feeling overwhelmed by emotions or stuck in unhealthy patterns.

This four session group on Tuesdays will help you process what moving in life with grief can look like. How do I face the emotional experience of grief? How do I talk to people about my loss? How do I even understand loss? What can the next chapter of life look like? These are just some of the questions to process as we experience the unrelenting thoughts and emotions in life after loss.

Think of your grief as a wilderness—a vast, inhospitable forest. You must journey through this wilderness. To find your way out, you must become acquainted with its terrain and learn to follow the sometimes hard-to-find trail that leads to healing. In the wilderness of your grief, the touchstones are your trail markers. They are the signs that let you know you are on the right path. When you learn to identify and rely on the touchstones, you will find your way to hope and healing.

My calling is to companion those experiencing the overwhelming grief of a loved one.
At Free 2 Grieve, we believe there is no one right way to grieve the death of a loved one. That is why we strive to offer multiple options of grief support to choose from. Some people may just need a good cup of coffee and a listening ear. At other times we may need a safe group of peers walking a similar grief journey. Then there may be times we need a bit more intense care from a train bereavement therapist. Maybe a combination of all 3.

Struggles in life are not a matter of if, but when. They also come in a multitude of severity and nearly every one of us will, at some point, need help from outside sources. Sometimes, maybe that's just an ear to listen or an objective, caring voice of reason. No matter what you are experiencing, you don't have to face it alone. Together, we will work to get you and/or your loved ones through these difficult times. Your safety, daily functioning, and optimal well-being are my top priorities. Let's talk about it. Wherever you are in life, that is where we'll begin.

When we start seeking out romantic partners, we seek out what is familiar- what we learned from our parents or caregivers. Sometimes our parents gave us great examples of what a future relationship should be like; other times, our parents showed us what to avoid in those relationships. As adults we are continually trying to recreate what feels comfortable in our future relationships based on our past experiences, namely, our childhood environments. Things can go wrong when we have unmet emotional needs from childhood and then project them onto our partner. This can lead to many disappointments and failed expectations.

Grief Support Groups

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
